However, living in a city is often very expensive. You must find a well-paid job, otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. living in a big city英语作文2

Life in the city is very different from life in the villages and on the farms. People in large cities are much more careful to respect the privacy of the individual. Sometimes this feeling seems to be one of indifference, but it is a convention of city life to curb ones curiosity about the personal affairs of strangers. Villagers and farmers are likely to show a great deal of interest in all their neighbors. Opportunities for bright young people are greater in the cities and there has been a steady stream of hopeful jobseekers from the villages and farms to the large metropolitan areas.

My favourite city is Seoul.Seoul is the capital of South Korea and is located on the Han River in the country's northwest. The city is situated about 50 km (~30 mi) south of the North Korean border, also known as the de-militarized zone (DMZ). Seoul is a city with ancient history, the area of Seoul appears in history as early as 18 BCE,when the kingdom of Baekje founded its capital,Wiryeseong,in what is now southeastern Seoul. Modern Seoul descends from a city called Namgyeong, built during the Goryeo era, which then became the capital of the Joseon dynasty in 1394. Seoul has been the capital of successive Korean nations ever since.Designated the status of a Special City,Seoul is administered directly by the national government.

With over ten million people,Seoul is South Korea's largest city and one of the largest cities in the world by population. Covering an area of only 605 square kilometers, smaller than New York City or Tokyo,it is one of the world's most densely populated major cities.

The Seoul National Capital Area, which includes the major port city of Incheon, has almost 23 million inhabitants making it the second most populous metropolitan area in the world, after Greater Tokyo. Almost half of South Korea's entire population lives in the Seoul National Capital Area, and nearly one quarter in Seoul itself, making it the country's political, cultural, and economic center,as well as a center for international business. The rapid economic, social and technological development of the city has played a key role in South Korea's development, and has been referred to as the "Miracle on the Han River".

Seoul hosts more than three million registered vehicles and widespread traffic congestion is common. In recent years, the metropolitan government has undertaken extensive clean up of the city's air and water pollution. The revival of Cheonggyecheon,a stream that flows through Seoul city center, was a recent major urban beautification project.

living in a big city英语作文4

I vividly recall my first visit, as a boy of twelve, to a big town. i had hardly been outside the confines (边缘) of the village where i was born and i had met and talked to no more than a few hundred people; but those few hundred i knew very well.

Of course we did sometimes see a strange face, but visitors from the outside world, whose coming always aroused great excitement, were few and far between (稀少). when i reached the town that i mentioned i was first overcome by the striking change from the slow and quiet life i had been used to. surely those swiftly (迅速地) moving vehicles (车辆) must inevitably collide (必然碰撞) with each other----or with us----at any moment, and those tall building collapse (倒坍) and crush (压碎) us all! but i soon forgot those fears and began to notice something even more amazing (令人惊奇的) ----the crowds of people on the pavements (人行道) who were hurrying past each other without a smile. it gradually dawned on me (我渐渐明白) that not only were they not interested in one another; they were strangers, and apparently (明显地) quite content (满意地) to remain so. it was the lack of friendliness among them which most dee* distressed (使痛苦)me.

I know that if we are to profit from the innumerable mechanical inventions (获益于无数机械发明) of this scientific age it is necessary for us to live together in large communities (社区). we are thus enabled (使能够) to provide and enjoy material benefits (利益) which are rarely available (少有的) in small villages----such amenities (令人愉快的事情) as good sanitation (环境卫生), cheap transport (交通), well-stocked (货物贮备充足的) shops----and in addition the very fact of our living together in large numbers makes it possible for us to live a richer social and cultural life. yet it seems to me that the mechanical inventions demand from ordinary men and women so much of their time and attention that they have none left for their fellow human beings.

When i think of those crowded pavements and of those thousands of people hurrying to and fro (来来往往) apparently with no thought for others i cannot help wondering whether the so-called (所谓的) benefits of civilization (文明) in a mechanical age are not being purchased (购买)at too high a price.

living in a big city英语作文6

Nowadays there appears a phenomenon that the western customs are spreading into the east countries step by step thus making many inhabitants who live in big cities enjoy themselves on these western festivals such as Christmas Day April Fool’s Day etc. Such phenomenon shows us that the world people are getting close gradually and the world is becoming smaller and smaller as well.

Therefore in my opinion it’s a normal phenomenon s well as a necessary trend.First of all it shows that we Chinese have become much opener rather than clinging to some very old customs which are opposite our living. Looking back on the history we can find the answer to why our China was very poor and weak in the 1800’s. Yes the answer is that we closed ourselves not to let other countries know about us and this led us to a very hard road on which we suffered many wars that many European countries launched. So I think it is more than necessary to accept other customs instead of closing ourselves. Of course festivals are just the beginning. What’s more the Open and Reform Policy results in this. So I want to say it is a great achievement for the policy. Since we took the policy into practice our country is developing with a rapid speed. No doubt it is an essential trend.Last but not the least we may get closer and closer not only to our home friends but also to many foreigners. We can never feel embarrassed for not knowing the other’s customs and manners.

And more misunderstandings can be avoided as well.To sum up the trend has its great advantage to a certain extent. However if we admire the western customs too much it will be a disadvantage because China is our own country all of us should enjoy a patriotic heart. Wish in the near future we can see the situation that westerners are enjoying themselves on the Spring Festival.

What I expect for city life is not just about drink bars, shopping mall, entertainment center etc, although they are indeed better than the facility in the rural areas.

What I expect for city life is a clearer environment, not only in the surroundings but also in people's spirit. I hope the people around me are all good mannered with politeness and courtesy, there is no quarrel, no battle, people treat each other with respect. I hope there would be no traffic jam as in Beijing our country capital today where traffic jam happened everyday, which make the citizens feel depressed and great pressure.

With industries and business developing quickly, the number of trees in many big cities has dramatically reduces. Efforts are being made to prevent people from cutting more trees. living in a big city英语作文 2

People are always wondering whether the country or the big city is the idea place to live. Some person may choose to live in the big city, while the others are interested in the quiet and natural surrounding in the country. In my opinion, I would like to live in country, just like my hometown, rather than a big city, such as Beijing or Shanghai.

The foremost reason for dwelling in the countryside is the comfortable and friendly life. Since than the atmosphere in metropolis goes from bad to worse, the neighbors don ’t know each other and people suffer from the noisy of cars. Hardly persons could resist the fresh air, the friendly neighbors and the closeness to nature in the

  countryside or a small town.

Live in the country or a small town. People could enjoy the first cock crow in the morning. The beautiful birds sing in the woods, fish swimming in the river, the

flowers bloom under the sunshine. What a great view. However, in the big city, people live in the forest which be made up of cement and steel. That’s not comfortable.

On the contrary, It is not that I belittle those who would prefer to stay in a big city. I think they have their life with much advantages. The traffic in metropolis is much batter than a village. And high technology could make the life more convenient.

Besides, aBetter education for children and a better medical care could be enjoyed by those who live in a big city.

But live in country means people could have apollution-free environment, a safer food sup*** and a bigger and cheaper housing. And I really miss my childhood wallpaper in the country where I grow up. It’s my happiest time.

In conclusion, I strongly hold that living in the countryside is much better than live in a big city because of the quiet surroundings in the countryside.

Nowadays, with globalization making the world more interconnected, a trend of accepting higher education has been on the rise. There are many students considering studying abroad, and here are some of the challenges they may confront with.

The first one is being exposed to a totally exotic environment. People who studied abroad will be open to everything new and strange. On social level, they also meet a diverse range of counterparts. Sometimes it is no easy to become the ice-breaker.

The other challenge may come from their family, or to be specific, the oversea students will be more likely to be homesick, especially for those who are in their first year, and their parents will share that feeling with them.

Besides, we shall not forget the obstacles of culture and language. It is quite often that even if they can understand every single word, they will still fail to grasp the true meaning.

Despite all these challenges, there are still great amount of people choose to study abroad, because great challenges always come along with great opportunities.

Different people hold different views about the question whether to live in the big city or a small town. Some people prefer the harmonious atmosphere and slow rhythm in the small place. However, personally speaking, I would like to live in the big city for better education, more job opportunities, and high quality of life.

Firstly, we can get better education in the big city than in the small town. It is well accepted thatschools get no access the computer commonly in the remote area for lack of fund and relatively poor local economy, let alone advanced facilities and multimedia teaching, but all of these are available in the city. Furthermore, not merely is there better learning environment, the teaching levels in city are far outweigh that in the small town, which will ensure better instruction to students and improvement of overall qualities.

Another advantages to live in a big city is that there are more job opportunities. For example, I want to be an excellent journalist after graduation and I am looking for a part-time job to accumulate experience. Contrary to the the situation in the small town that only in the cultural center can I find a job relative to my major, there are more choices in the city, such as magazine, news office, publishing company and so on. So abundant job opportunities there are that I can choose a most suitable onewhich can not only enrich my resume, but also functions as a valuable experience to put me in a favorable position in the future job market.

Finally, living in a big city is more convenient and comfortable. We can take public transportation to go to workplaces, use fitness facilities to keep healthy, buy any necessaries and commodities in a large market, get access to more TV channels or watch movies in the theater, and so on. The advancements of big city improve our living standards to a great degree, and life has been more enjoyable compared with living in the small town.

Therefore, we can safely conclude that we can get better education, more suitable jobs and lead a superior life in a big city than in a small town, and it is not surprising that the majority of people tend tomigrate from small towns to big cities today.

Nowadays, most people, especially those who live in the country, want to move to the city. But is the city life perfect?Every coin has two sides.

It’s true that things seem to be more convenient in some ways such as finding jobs, transportation service, etc. Also places for relaxing like parks and hotels are attractive. But we have to say someting bad, too. The environment is awful because the population is too large and too much rubbish make the air unfresh. We have to pay lots of money on our life including the bad things above!

In my oppinion,we must take a correct attitude to it.Nomatter where we are,we can creat our own sky if we try our best!

It is important to deal with the rubbish in cities. Rubbish must be treated properly. Otherwise it may cause a lot of problems. It may pollute the air and water. When people breathe the polluted air or drink the polluted water, they may get iii.

Our city has begun to pay attention to the problem. As far as I know, some rubbish is sorted and sent to different factories. Rubbish, such as old newspapers and glass, is recycled.

Some harmful rubbish is sent to a certain place and buried.Waste air is cleaned before it goes into the air. Waste water is treated before it is poured into rivers.

To protect the environment, the government has passed laws to prevent people from throwing rubbish everywhere. We should do our best to take good care of the environment and fight against pollution.

Someone may choose to live at countryside rather than in a big city as they think the countryside has fresh air and no traffic jam.But for me,I like to live in a big city, because there're lots of benefits of living in a big city.

Firstly,if you live in a big city, you can buy what you want anytime at day or night, because there're so many supermarkets open for 24 hours one day. This will save you a lot of trouble to buy things as you could find anything you want in the supermarket or a mall.

Secondly, you could feel the modernization of the city. The development of the city will broaden your horizen and let you learn more. This you can only get by living in a city, not at countryside.

At last, the children living in a big city can enjoy better education than the countryside kids.Because there are many good schools and good teachers. So you can learn more knowledge in a big city.

In one word,I would like to live in a big city because there're really so many benefits.

if we live in the city centre we can enjoy urban convenient traffic, and convenient shopping, enjoy more development living environment!

But for different people there are different ideas, especialy the old people ,they need quite living environment.City centre can not afford this .And many people may come to city centre,so it is less safety .

But I like city centre life. For our young people ,if we live there ,we can learn more fashion things from different people. And get moer communications with others.

Modernization and urbanization bring both benefits and problems. In order to solve the problem of housing, high-rise buildings have been and are being put up in ever greater numbers in more and more big cities.

High-rise buildings have their advantages and disadvantages, of course. In urban areas where land is expensive, they take up less space. Some people say that high-rise buildings can give a city striking beauty. Some buildings are apartments, which can house hundreds of families under one roof.

On the other hand, high-rise buildings may be dangerous. What if there is a fire or an earthquake? What if power and water are in short sup***? In addition, high-rise buildings/blocks may not be suitable for children and old people.

To conclude,it goes without saying that high-rise buildings are necessary, but their number should be limited. At the same time, effective measures must be taken to solve such problems as the sup*** of water and power.

starting career in a big city or small town

want to be a small fish in a big pond or the other way round? every graduate faces this question when he starts his career. some prefer to stay in the big cities after graduation. to them, big cities mean more experiences, more opportunities to see the big world and more space for career development. at the same time, higher salary is another temptation.

but some other graduates want to start in small towns. even though there may not be many big companies, they can have a quieter and less competitive life. another reason is they can be a big fish in a small pond. they can easily get the management’s attention and may win promotion earlier.

as far as i am concerned, i prefer to start in a big city like shanghai. a good begin is half the battle, and in shanghai i can find a job in a big company where i can meet people from different places and cultures. i will learn from them what i can not get from textbooks.

Plenty of students decide to stay in big cities after graduation, becoming a member of the fast-paced big city.

Meanwhile, some students start their career in small towns, enjoying the easy life there. In my opinion, both choices have advantages and disadvantages: in big cities, there are more job opportunities, more fashionable products and more wonderful night-life for us young people, but the fast-paced life and high consumption level can easily make us tired and exhausted; on the contrary, in small town, the easy and slow-paced life there will make people more comfortable, but there are fewer work positions and less entertainment. To me, first of all, a good job is the most important thing when I making my choice, regardless of big city or small town. Secondly, I intend to go back to my hometown Wuhan, which is a big city. Anyway, no matter where you work, you should always work hard on your job, which is the most important thing.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities

Housing problem has become one of the biggest concerns for people in big cities. With the rapid development of industry and great increase in employment, more people are swarming into cities. Accommodations have become ever difficult, causing inconvenience to people's work and life.

Many proposals have been put forward to solve this problem. Some suggest that more high buildings be constructed. Some insist that the underground be developed. Others propose that satellite cities be built. Still others argue that cities should be expanded to move people to the suburbs.

Personally, I am in favor of building satellite cities in the suburbs. For one thing, these cities are not far away from big cities. It is still very convenient for people to go downtown as they wish. For another, the fresh air and adequate space there will be a great attraction for people who are living in crowded cities. If many people move to the satellite cities, the housing problem in big cities will cease to exist. I am against the idea of developing the underground. Because compared with building satellite cities, it is more costly. With each house to light even at daytime, we need a lot of electricity. Besides, it witt deprive people of the fresh air and bright sunshine which they can get so easily when they are above the ground.

To Build a Fire大学英语作文1

day had broken cold and gray, eceedingly cold and gray, when the man turned aside from the main yukon trail and climbed the high earth-bank, where a dim and little traveled trail led eastward through the fat spruce timberland。 it was a steep bank, and he paused for breath at the top, ecusing the act to himself by looking at his watch。 it was nine oclock。 there was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky。 it was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun。 this fact did not worry the man。 he was used to the lack of sun。 it had been days since he had seen the sun, and he knew that a few more-days must pass before that cheerful orb, due south, would just peep above the sky-line and dip immediately from view。

the man flung a look back along the way he had come。 the yukon lay a mile wide and hidden under three feet of ice。 on top of this ice were as many feet of snow。 it was all pure white, rolling in gentle, undulations where the ice jams of the freeze-up had formed。 north and south, as far as his eye could see, it was unbroken white, save for a dark hairline that curved and twisted from around the spruce-covered island to the south, and that curved and twisted away into the north, where it disappeared behind another spruce-covered island。 this dark hair-line was the trail--the main trail--that led south five hundred miles to the chilcoot pass, dyea, and salt water; and that led north seventy miles to dawson, and still on to the north a thousand miles to nulato, and finally to st。 michael on bering sea, a thousand miles and half a thousand more。

but all this--the mysterious, far-reaching hair-line trail。 the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all--made no impression on the man。 it was not because he was long used to it。 he was a newcomer! in the land, a chechaquo, and this was his first winter。 the trouble with him was that he was without imagination。 he was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances。 fifty degrees below zero meant eighty-odd degrees of frost。 such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all。 it did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon mans frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there on it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immortality and mans place in the universe。 fifty degrees below zero stood forte bite of frost that hurt and that must be guarded against by the use of mittens, ear-flaps, warm moccasins, and thick socks。 fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero。 that there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head。

as he turned to go on, he spat speculatively。 there was a sharp, eplosive crackle that startled him。 he spat again。 and again, in the air, before it could fall to the snow, the spittle crackled。 he knew that at fifty below spittle crackled on the snow, but this spittle had crackled in the air。 undoubtedly it was colder than fifty below--how much colder he did not know。 but the temperature did not matter。 he was bound for the old claim on the left fork of henderson creek, where the boys were already。 they had come over across the divide from the indian creek country, while he had come the roundabout way to take; a look at the possibilities of getting out logs in the spring from the islands in the yukon。 he would be in to camp by si oclock; a bit after dark, it was true, but the boys would be there, a fire would be going, and a hot supper would be ready。 as for lunch, he pressed his hand against the protruding bundle under his jacket。 it was also under his shirt, wrapped up in a handkerchief and lying against the naked skin。 it was the only way to keep the biscuits from freezing。 he smiled agreeably to himself as he thought of those biscuits, each cut open and sopped in bacon grease, and each enclosing a generous slice of fried bacon。

he plunged in among the big spruce trees。 the trail was faint。 a foot of snow had fallen since the last sled had passed over, and he was glad he was without a sled, traveling light。 in fact, he carried nothing but the lunch wrapped in the handkerchief。 he was surprised, however, at the cold。 it certainly was cold, he concluded as he rubbed his numb nose and cheek-bones with his mittened hand。 he was a warm-whiskered man, but the hair on his face did not protect the high cheek-bones and the eager nose that thrust itself aggressively into the frosty air。

at the mans heels trotted a dog, a big native husky, the proper wolfdog, gray-coated and without any visible or temperamental difference from its brother, the wild wolf。 the animal was depressed by the tremendous cold。 it knew that it was no time for traveling。 its instinct told it a truer tale than was told to the man by the mans judgment。 in reality, it was not merely colder than fifty below zero; it was colder than sity below, than seventy below。 it was seventy-five below zero。 since the freezing point is thirty-two above zero, it meant that one hundred and seven degrees of frost obtained。 the dog did not know anything about thermometers。 possibly in its brain there was no sharp consciousness of a condition of very cold such as was in the mans brain。 but the brute had its instinct。 it eperienced a vague but menacing apprehension that subdued it and made it slink along at the mans heels, and that made it question eagerly every unwonted movement of the man as if epecting him to go into camp or to seek shelter somewhere and build a fire。 the dog had learned fire, and it wanted fire, or else to burrow under the snow and cuddle its warmth away from the air。

the frozen moisture of its breathing had settled on its fur in a fine powder of frost, and especially were its jowls, muzzle, and eyelashes whitened by its crystalled breath。 the mans red beard and mustache were likewise frosted, but more solidly, the deposit taking the form of ice and increasing with every warm, moist breath he ehaled。 also, the man was chewing tobacco, and the muzzle of ice held his lips so rigidly that he was unable to clear his chin when he epelled the juice。 the result was that a crystal beard of the color and solidity of amber was increasing its length on his chin。 if he fell down it would shatter itself, like glass, into brittle fragments。 but he did not mind the appendage。 it was the penalty all tobacco-chewers paid in that country, and he had been out before in two cold snaps。 they had not been so cold as this, he knew, but by the spirit thermometer at sity mile he knew they had been registered at fifty below and at fifty-five。

he held on through the level stretch of woods for several miles, crossed a wide flat of rigger-heads, and dropped down a bank to the frozen bed of a small stream。 this was henderson creek, and he knew he was ten miles from the forks。 he looked at his watch。 it was ten oclock。 he was making four miles an hour, and he calculated that he would arrive at the forks at half-past twelve。 he decided to celebrate that event by eating his lunch there。

the dog dropped in again at his heels, with a tail drooping discouragement, as the man swung along the creek-bed。 the furrow of the old sled-trail was plainly visible, but a dozen inches of snow covered the marks of the last runners。 in a month no man had come up or down that silent creek。 the man held steadily on。 he was not much given to thinking, and just then particularly he had nothing to think about save that he would eat lunch at-the forks and that at si oclock he would be in camp with the boys。 there was nobody to talk to; and, had there been, speech would have been impossible because of the ice-muzzle on his mouth。 so he continued monotonously to chew tobac

once in a while the thought reiterated itself that it was very cold and that he had never eperienced such cold。 as he walked along he rubbed his cheek-bones and nose with the back of his mittened hand。 he did this automatically, now and again changing hands。 but rub as he would, the instant he stopped his cheek-bones went numb, and the following instant the end of his nose went numb。 he was sure to frost his cheeks; he knew that, and eperienced a pang of regret that he had not devised a nose-strap of the sort bud wore in cold snaps。 such a strap passed across the cheeks, as well, and saved them。 but it didnt matter much, after all。 what were frosted cheeks? a bit painful, that was all; they were never serious。

empty as the mans mind was of thoughts, he was keenly observant, and he noticed the changes in the creek, the curves and bends and timber jams, and always he shar* noted where he placed his feet。 once coming around a bend, he shied abruptly, like a startled horse, curved away from the place where he had been walking, and retreated several paces back along the trail。 the creek he knew was frozen clear to the bottom,--no creek could contain water in that arctic winter,--but he knew also that there were springs that bubbled out from the hillsides and ran along under the snow and on top the ice of the creek。 he knew that the coldest snaps never froze these springs, and he knew likewise their danger。 they were traps。 they hid pools of water under the snow that might be three inches deep, or three feet。 sometimes a skin of ice。 half an inch thick covered them, and in turn was covered by the snow sometimes there were alternate layers of water and ice-skin, so that when one broke through he kept on breaking through for a while, sometimes wetting himself to the waist。

that was why he had shied in such panic。 he had felt the give under his feet and heard the crackle of a snow-hidden ice-skin。 and to get his feet wet in such a temperature meant trouble and danger。 at the very least it meant delay, for he would be forced to stop and build a fire, and under its protection to bare his feet while he dried his socks and moccasins。 he stood and studied the creek-bed and its banks, and decided that the flow of water came from the right。 he reflected a while, rubbing his nose and cheeks, then skirted to the left, stepping gingerly and testing the footing for each step。 once clear of the danger, he took a fresh chew of tobacco and swung along at his four-mile gait。

in the course of the net two hours he came upon several similar traps。 usually the snow above the hidden pools had a sunken, candied appearance that advertised the danger。 once again, however, he had a close call; and once, suspecting danger, he compelled the dog to go on in front。 the dog did not want to go。 it hung back until the man shoved it forward, and then it went quickly across the white, unbroken surface。 suddenly it broke through, floundered to one side, and got away to firmer footing。 it had wet its forefeet and legs, and almost immediately the water that clung to it turned to ice。 it made quick efforts to lick the ice off its legs, then dropped down in the snow and began to bite out the ice that had formed between the toes。 l his was a matter of instinct。 to permit the ice to remain would mean sore feet。 it did not know this。 it merely obeyed the mysterious prompting that arose from the deep crypts of its being。 but the man knew, having achieved a judgment on the subject, and he removed the mitten from his right hand and helped tear out the ice-particles。 he did not epose his fingers more than a minute, and was astonished at the swift numbness that smote them。 it certainly was cold。 he pulled on the mitten hastily, and beat the hand savagely across his chest。

at twelve oclock the day was at its brightest。 yet the sun was too; far south an its winter journey to clear the horizon。 the bulge of the earth intervened between it arid henderson creek, where the man walked under a clear sky at noon and cast no shadow。 at half-past twelve, to the minute, he arrived at the forks of the creek。 he was。 pleased at the speed he had made。 if he kept it up, he would certainly be with the boys by si。 he unbuttoned his jacket and shirt and drew forth his lunch。 the action consumed no more than a quarter of a minute, yet in that brief moment the numbness laid hold of the eposed fingers。 he did not put the mitten on, but, instead struck the fingers a dozen sharp smashes against his leg。 then he sat down on a snow-covered log to eat。 the sting that followed upon the striking of his fingers against his leg ceased so quickly that he was startled。 he had had no chance to take a bite of biscuit。 he struck the fingers repeatedly and returned them to the mitten, baring the other hand for the purpose of eating, he tried to take a mouthful, but the ice-muzzle prevented。 he had forgotten to build a fire and thaw out。 he chuckled at his foolishness, and as he chuckled he noted the numbness creeping into the eposed fingers。 also, he noted that the stinging which had first come to his toes when he sat down was already passing away。 he wandered whether the toes were warm or numb。 he moved them inside the moccasins and decided that they were numb。

he pulled the mitten on hurriedly and stood up。 he was a bit frightened。 he stamped up and down until the stinging returned into the feet。 it certainly was cold, was his thought。 that man from sulphur creek had spoken the truth when telling how cold it sometimes got in the country。 and he had laughed at him at the time! that showed one must not be too sure of things。 there was no mistake about it, it was cold。 he strode up and down, stamping his feet and threshing his arms, until reassured by the returning warmth。 then he got out matches and proceeded to make a fire。 from the undergrowth, where high water of the previous spring had lodged a sup* of seasoned twigs, he got his firewood。 working carefully from a small beginning, he soon had a roaring fire, over which he thawed the ice from his face and in the protection of which he ate his biscuits。 for the moment the cold space was outwitted。 the dog took satisfaction in the fire, stretching out close enough for warmth and far enough away to escape being singed。

when the man had finished, be filled his pipe and took his comfortable time over a smoke。 then he pulled on his mittens, settled the ear-flaps of his cap firmly about his ears, and took the creek trail up the left fork。 the dog was disappointed and yearned back toward the fire。 this man did not know cold。 possibly all the generations of his ancestry had been ignorant of cold of real cold, of cold one hundred and seven degrees below freezing point。 but the dog knew; all its ancestry knew, and it had inherited the knowledge。 and it knew that it was not good to walk abroad in such fearful cold。 it was the time to lie snug in a hole in the snow and wait for a curtain of cloud to be drawn across the face of outer space whence this cold came。 on the other hand, there was no keen intimacy between the dog and the man。 the one was the toil-slave of the other, and the only caresses it had ever received were the caresses of the whiplash and of harsh and menacing throat-sounds that threatened the whiplash。 so, the dog made no effort to communicate its apprehension to the man。 it was not concerned in the welfare of the man, it was for its own sake that it yearned back toward the fire。 but the man whistled, and spoke to it with the sound of whiplashes and the dog swung in at the mans heel and followed after。

the man took a chew of tobacco and proceeded to start a new amber beard。 also, his moist breath quickly powdered with white his mustache, eyebrows, and lashes。 there did not seem to be so many springs on the left fork of the henderson, and for half an hour the man saw no signs of any。 and then it happened。 at a place where there were

-ears pricked forward intently as it watched the man and the man, as he beat and threshed with his arms and hands, felt a great surge of envy as he regarded the creature that was warm ant secure in its natural covering。

after a time he was aware of the first far-away signals of sensation in his beaten fingers。 the faint tingling grew stronger till it evolved into a stinging ache that was ecruciating, but which the man hailed with satisfaction。 he stripped the mitten from his right hand and fetched forth the birch bark。 the eposed fingers were quickly going numb again。 net he brought out his bunch of sulphur matches。 but the tremendous cold had already driven the life out of his fingers。 in his effort to separate one match from the others, the whole bunch fell in the snow。 he tried to pick it out of the snow, but failed。 the dead fingers could neither touch nor clutch。 he was very careful。 he drove the thought of his freezing feet, and nose, and cheeks, out of his mind, devoting his whole soul to the matches。 he watched, using the sense of vision in place of that of touch, and when he saw his fingers on each side the bunch, he dosed them--that is, he willed to close them, for the wires were down, and the fingers did not obey。 he pulled the mitten on the right hand and beat it fiercely against his knee。 then。 with both mittened hands, he scooped the bunch of matches, along with much snow, into his lap。 yet he was no better off。

after some manipulation he managed to get the bunch between the heels of his mittened hands。 in this fashion he carried it to his mouth。 the ice crackled and snapped when by a violent effort he opened his mouth。 he drew the lower jaw in, curled the upper lip out of the way, and scraped the bunch with his upper teeth in order to separate a match。 he succeeded in getting one, which he dropped on his lap。 he was no better off。 he could not pick it up。 then he devised a way。 he picked it up in his teeth and scratched it on his leg。 twenty times he scratched before he succeeded in lighting it。 as it flamed he held it with his teeth to the birch bark。 but the burning brimstone went up his nostrils and into his lungs, causing him to cough spasmodically。 the match fell into the snow and went out。

the old-timer an sulphur creek was right, he thought in the moment of controlled despair that ensued after fifty below, a man should travel with a partner。 he beat his hands, but failed in eciting any sensation。 suddenly he bared both hands, removing the mittens with his teeth。 he caught the whole bunch between the heels of his hands。 his arm muscles not being frozen enabled him to press the hand-heels tightly against the matches。 then he scratched the bunch along his leg it flared into flame, seventy sulphur matches at once! there was no wind to blow them out he kept his head to one side to escape the strangling fumes, and held the blazing bunch to the birth bark。 as he so held it, he became aware of sensation in his hand。 his flesh was burning。 he could smell it。 deep down below the surface he could feel it。 the sensation developed into pain that grew acute。 and still he endured, it holding the flame of the matches clumsily to the bark that would not light readily because his own burning hands were in the way, absorbing most of the flame。

at last, when he could endure no more, he jerked his hands apart。 the blazing matches fell sizzling into the snow, but the birch bark was alight。 he began laying dry grasses and the tiniest twigs on the flame。 he could not pick and choose, for he had to lift the fuel between the heels of his hands。 small pieces of rotten wood and green moss clung to the twigs, and he bit them off as well as he could with his teeth。 he cherished the flame carefully and awkwardly。 it meant life, and it must not perish。 the withdrawal of blood from the surface of his body now made him begin to shiver, and he grew more awkward。 a large piece of green moss fell squarely on the little fire。 he tried to poke it out with his fingers, but his shivering frame made him poke too far and he disrupted the nucleus of the little fire, the burning grasses and tiny twigs separating and scattering。 he tried to poke them together again, but in spite of the tenseness of the effort, his shivering got away with him, and the twigs were hopelessly scattered。 each twig gushed a puff of smoke and went out。 the fire-provider had failed。 as he looked apathetically about him, his eyes chanced on the dog, sitting across the ruins of the fire from him, in the snow, making restless, hunching movements, slightly lifting one forefoot and then the other, shifting its weight back and forth on them with wistful eagerness。

the sight of the dog put a wild idea into his head。 he remembered the tale of the man, caught in a blizzard, who killed a steer and crawled inside the carcass, and so was saved。 he would kill the dog and bury his hands in the warm body until the numbness went out of them。 then he could build another fire。 he spoke to the dog, calling it to him; but in his voice was a strange note of fear that frightened the animal, who had never known the man to speak in such way before。 something was the matter, and its suspicious nature sensed danger--it knew not what danger, but somewhere, somehow, in its brain arose an apprehension of the man。 it flattened its ears down at the sound of the mans voice, and its restless, hunching movements and the liftings and shiftings of its forefeet became more pronounced; but it would not come to the man。 he got on his hands and knees and crawled toward the dog。 this unusual posture again ecited suspicion, and the animal sidled mincingly away。

the man sat up in the snow for a moment and struggled for calmness。 then he pulled on his mittens, by means of his teeth, and got upon his feet。 he glanced down at first in order to assure himself that he was really standing up, for the absence of sensation in his feet left him unrelated to the earth。 his erect position in itself started to drive the webs of suspicion from the dogs mind; and when he spoke peremptorily, with the sound of whiplashes in his voice, the dog rendered its customary allegiance and came to him。 as it came within reaching distance, the man lost his control。 his arms flashed out to the dog, and he eperienced genuine surprise when he discovered that his hands could not clutch, that there was neither bend nor feeling in the fingers。 he had forgotten for the moment that they were frozen and that they were freezing more and more。 all this happened quickly, and before the animal could get away, he encircled its body with his arms。 he sat down in the snow, and in this fashion held the dog, while it snarled and whined and struggled。

but it was all he could do, hold its body encircled in his arms and sit there。 he realized that he could not kill the dog。 there was no way to do it。 with his helpless hands he could neither draw nor hold his sheath knife nor throttle the animal。 he released it, and it plunged wildly away, with tail between its legs, and still snarling。 it halted forty feet away and surveyed him curiously, with ears shar* pricked forward。 the man looked down at his hands in order to locate them, and found them hanging on the ends of his arms。 it struck him as curious that one should have to use his eyes in order to find out where his hands were。 he began threshing his arms back and forth, beating the mittened hands against his sides。 he did this for five minutes, violently, and his heart pumped enough blood up to the surface to put a stop to his shivering。 but no sensation was aroused in the hands。 he had an impression that they hung like weights on the ends of his arms, but when he tried to run the impression down, he could not find it。

a certain fear of death, dull and oppressive, came to him。 this fear quickly became poignant as he realized that it was no longer a mere matter of freezing his fingers and toes, or of losing his hands and feet, but tha

A Hero in My Heart英语作文4

Our research team conducted a survey among the local children on how much time they usually spend per week talking with their parents.

According to the survey, children spend less time having heart—to—heart talks with their parents when they grow older.

For example, the 7—9 age group spends as many as 6 hours per week on average, while the 16—18 age group spends only half the time talking with their parents.

There are three major reasons for this.

60% of the children think they have few topics in common with their parents.

Another 20% say both parents and children are too busy working or studying to have a talk.

Others even consider it useless talking with their parents, arguing that it does little good to their studies.

In my opinion, having regular heart—to—heart talks is a good way to form a good relationship between parents and children.

As children we should first show respect to our parents, looking on them as our close friends and letting them know what we are interested in.

Secondly,we should learn how to be a good listener.

  A Friend of Mine英语作文 4

I'm sorry it has taken so long to tell you - your card and cash arrived intact and well timed. I had to make time to share with you the bounteous details and depth of the gratitude we feel for you. As I shared in an earlier email, I am pretty sapped of strength this year for Christmas celebrating. Every ounce of energy and resource are doled out carefully. Before your gift arrived I had realized that we would not be involved in a frenzied exchange of gifts. Neither energy nor finances permitted. But, I am a Christmas fanatic; preparing in years past from the first fall of an autumn leaf until the last January box was stored away with tears. It is impossible to squelch the visions of sugar plums dancing in my head. I began to pine and whine for the familiar tastes, sounds and smells of the season as my body refused to grant me means. Out of fear of depression, I began to have the glimmer of an idea to satisfy my need for the familiar. Christmas tradition, for me, is steeped in vision, taste and smells. If I could only bring into my home the tastes without the baking, the smells without the effort, and the sights without the frenzied preparations - I would have my Christmas. And then your card arrived. I told my husband the idea. "Let's go to Trader Joe's and buy the things that we would usually do without. Let's add in some Christmas tastes that we would normally make for ourselves or receive as gifts. Mind you, I was thinking of old-fashioned taffy, peppermint sticks, sugar cookies and gingerbread houses and fruitcake. I was thinking of taper candle and pine bough centerpieces, cinnamon scented pinecones and poinssetias in gold foil covered pots. I was thinking prime rib roast, red potatoes, asparagus tips, shrimp cocktail, plum pudding, mince meat pie and whipped cream and clam chowder." asked him what he would add. He said, "tomatoes". My Bing-Crosby-snow-covered-backdrop-tinsel-and-bow-bedecked-crackling-fire-greeting-card vision-and-magic-spell moment went "kerplunk". So, tomatoes it became!

Maybe not considered the most important part of head, hair, in my opinion, is at least the most eye catching one, except for those who are bald, like Ge You. Anyway, hair plays an in dispensable role in our life, and sometimes it can offer us a lot of fun. Actually, I myself have several interesting experiences related to hair and would like to share them with you all.

The first story happened when I was eight. At that time, I was so boyish that every afternoon during the summer holiday I was seen disporting with a crowd of boys in the fierce sunlight, which gave me a precious gift, a bronze complexion. To make things worse, my hair was rather short, even shorter than most of the boys, just some one inch. One day, following my mother,I went to a department store to buy a pair of sports shoes. There were a variety of shoes of different colors and styles standing on the shelves. At once, I caught sight of a black pair with some silver streaks on its instep. Then I showed them to my mother,"What a wonderfu pair!""Not bad", mother said, "but I think they are for boys." Obviously, the saleswoman overheard our conversation, she came up to us and recommended the pair I chose, and with a radiant smile, she added, "this pair is especially suitable for the active boys just like you." My mother and I couldn't help laughing, and I had to protest, "Thank you, mad am, but I am a girl." She was genuinely shocked and touched my short hair unbelievingly. Even when we left with a pair of girlish shoes, she still had doubts about my gender.

From then on, I had to wear a hairpin to demonstrate that I am a girl. And as time passed, I broke the old saying, "the longer your hair is, the less sensibility you have." When I was in senior middle school, I already had a long plait tied back. My classmate and neighbor Nancy also has long straight hair. Since the beautiful princesses in the movie always have shining wavy hair, we both longed for the hairstyle and decided to do it ourselves. One Saturday afternoon, we attempted to carry out our great plan, but it turned out to be a disaster. To begin with, we divided our hair into several strands and combed them neat. Then we carefully rolled up every strand and fixed them with hairpins. The most important step is to cover the hair with a hot towel so that the stream could change our straight hair into the fashionable wavy style. After that both of us sat still on the chairs, afraid to ruin our perfect work. At last one hour passed,we couldn't wait to appreciate our new image. We pulled down the towel, removed the hairpins and rushed to the mirror. "Oh.My God! How terrible!" we both CRIed. The hair winded disorderly and defied all our efforts to make them tidy. The whole thing was a mess. We looked at each other helplessly and wondered what to do. At the very moment, my mother came home and was really amused by our funny so called wavy hair. Luckily, a magical thing came to our rescue, the vinegar. Plunged into the mixture of water and vinegar, our hair got straightened and no longer winded together.

Of course, hair means a lot more. The dyed black of the elderly can demonstrate their vigor and optimism, while the shining green hair of a cool guy shows off his pioneer spirit. And in the most renowned short story of O'Henry, The Gift of the Magi, Tara sold her beautiful brown hair to buy her husband a golden chain as the Christmas present, which moves thousands of readers to tears. To some extent, hair is a symbol of lifestyle and the philosophy of life.

The way of life is progressive. It always goes along the incline of the infinite mental triangle. Nothing can stop him. What is life? Life is a very valuable thing, only once. Plants of different life can be regenerated, but human life can never be second times. There are many people who love life, such as: Zhang Haidi, rusty, etc..

Today, I want to introduce a man who loves life very much -- Hawking.

Who is Hocking? A myth, a contemporary most outstanding theoretical physicist, a giant under the name of science. Maybe he is just a wheelchair and a brave man who challenges fate. Once, a wheelchair back to Berlin apartment, crossing the road was knocked down by a car, broken left arm, broken head, sewn 13 needles, about 48 hours later, he went back to the office to work. Though the handicap of the body is becoming more and more serious, Hocking tries to live like an ordinary person and accomplish anything he can do. He was even lively - it sounds a bit funny, and after he was completely unable to move, he still insisted on driving the wheelchair with the only movable finger to "hit" on the way to the office; when he met Prince Charles, he turned his wheelchair to show off, and the result rolled to Charles. The prince's toes. Of course, Hocking has also tasted the evil result of "free" action, the master of quantum gravity, many times in the weak gravity of the earth, jumping into a wheelchair. Fortunately, every time he was stubbornly "standing".

In 1985, a tracheal surgeries were performed and the ability to speak was completely lost. Under such circumstances, he wrote the famous "brief history of time" very hard, and explored the origin of the universe.

Though Hocking is a disabled person, he still loves life, tenacious struggle, and strives to go forward to the triangular slope. So what do we have to do with these non - disabled people? Do they love life more than they do?

So called: life is like water. It is beautiful only when its rush and rush towards it.

Once upon a time, there were two very good friends who lived together in the shade of a rock. Strange as it may seem, one was a lion and one was a tiger. They had met when they were too young to know the difference between lions and tigers. So they did not think their friendship was at all unusual. Besides, it was a peaceful part of the mountains, possibly due to the influence of a gentle forest monk who lived nearby. He was a hermit , one who lives far away from other people.

For some unknown reason, one day the two friends got into a silly argument. The tiger said, ;Everyone knows the cold netes when the moon wanes from full to new!; The lion said, ;Where did you hear such nonsense ? Everyone knows the cold netes when the moon waxes from new to full!

The argument got stronger and stronger. Neither could convince the other. They could not reach any conclusion to resolve the growing dispute. They even started calling each other names! Fearing for their friendship, they decided to go ask the learned forest monk, who would surely know about such things.

Visiting the peaceful hermit, the lion and tiger bowed respectfully and put their question to him. The friendly monk thought for a while and then gave his answer. ;It can be cold in any phase of the moon, from new to full and back to new again. It is the wind that brings the cold, whether from west or north or east. Therefore, in a way, you are both right! And neither of you is defeated by the other. The most important thing is to live without conflict, to remain united. Unity is best by all means.

The lion and tiger thanked the wise hermit. They were happy to still be friends.
