Three buildings in town were overrun by squirrels—the townhall, the hardware store, and the church. The town hall broughtin some cats. 圣诞老人的原名叫尼各老（Nicolaus）,大约在三世纪末期，出生在小亚细亚地方，他品行端正，又受到良好的教育。成年后，他便入修道院后来成为一名神父。不久他的父母去世了，他便把全部家产都变卖了，施舍给穷人。当时有一贫穷人家，家中有三个女儿，长女20岁、次女18岁、小女16岁；只有次女身体健壮，生的又聪明美丽，另两个女儿体弱多病。于是父亲想把次女卖掉来维持生活，圣尼各老得知后，就来安慰他们。到夜里 ，尼各老就偷偷装了三袜子金子，悄悄地分别放在三个女孩的床头；第二天，三姐妹发现了金子，都喜出望外，不但还清了债务，生活也无忧无虑了，后来知道金子是尼各老送的，那天正值圣诞节，就请他到家中表示感谢。
以后每逢圣诞节，人们就讲述这故事，孩子们听了，都很羡慕，希望圣诞老人也给他们送来礼物。 于是就有了上述的传说。（圣诞袜的传说也由此而来，后来，世界各地的孩子们都有了悬挂圣诞袜的*俗。）
后来尼各老升为主教，他竭力传扬圣教，于公元359年逝世，葬于圣殿。死后灵迹甚多，特别墓旁常流香液，可使百病痊愈。
