New roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.
Other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the Olympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example, more and more people will get to know China. I’m sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attract them strongly. And the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. What is more, Olympic Games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of Chinese youth with the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit. Justin is the best friend I have ever had, and I know I will cherish those days of staying together with him as the best part of my memory.
Friendship is a kind of treasure in our lives. It is actually like a bottle of wine, the longer it is kept, the sweeter it will be. It is also like a cup of tea. When we are thirsty, it will be our best choice, but when we have enough time to enjoy ourselves, it is also the most fragrant drink.
However, in this fast-developing modern society, the reality is not that. More and more people forget to enjoy the beauty of life and -the beauty of friendship. As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’s tooth. This is a true story.
65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. He often visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure.
In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had to leave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragon’s mouth.
He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decided to put right his childish error. In 2002, he visited Qingdao and returned it to the Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.
When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. I was dee*** touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I think to err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct one’s error.
Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of my friends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

WE AND OUR YELLOW RIVER: THRIVING TOGETHER
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The issue of the Yellow River has become the biggest concern of members of the Chinese peoples Political Consultative Conference. My childhood, in fact, is closely associated with the river. My father is an engineering geologist, and he used to take me with him on his trips to the hydropower stations on the river. I enjoyed those trips, especially the trip to Longyang Xia reservoir. Although ten years have passed since my visit, I can still recall the scenery; I can still recall the water I saw at the reservoir. It was pure, clean and blue, not like the water I saw in the middle reaches of the river, which had turned brown and muddy after passing through the Loess Plateau.
Once during our stay at the power station, we were caught in a thunderstorm. And when rain stopped, I could see trickles of water rolling down mountain slopes and flowing into the reservoir. It carried little mud or sand, because at that time, trees and grass still grew around the reservoir. And they protected the soil. At Longyang Xia I was struck by the beauty of nature, and as a child I wanted to stay there and to grow up with our Yellow River.
Li Bai, the Tang Dynasty poet, said praises to the flowing water in the Yellow River. He saw it as coming down from heaven and nurturing the people along her way to the sea. However, in 1997,for 330days, not a single drop of water from the Yellow River went into the sea. And droughts are not the only punishment by nature. A friend of my fathers, a university professor, is doing research on the Yellow River. According to this professor, the Yellow River will soon change its course if we allow this situation to continue. Because there is no longer enough water to carry away the silt and mud in the lower reaches of the river and the riverbed rises higher and higher each year.
We have taken too much from nature, but given back too little in return. And this is the cost of the unbalanced growth. If we had taken care of the vegetation in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River, we would still experience the river as Li Bai described it.
While the developed countries are consuming proportionally more natural resources than the rest of the world, theyve also taken some good measures in protecting nature. And as a developing country, China can learn from them in this aspect.
Last year, when I was visiting Australia with a group of Chinese students who had won prizes in an English Skills Test, our Australian hosts invited us to join them for a horse-ride in the mountains. After two hours on horseback, we reached a valley, where there was a most beautiful meadow, with flowers in all colors dotted on a huge blanket of green. When I began to praise the beauty of nature, my friends told me that in this valley, there used to be a big mine and the wastewater from the mine turned everything brown. When the mine was abandoned, people made great efforts to restore the green vegetation. They also used the latest biological technology choosing the best grass seeds suitable for the local soil. So the beautiful meadow is a result of commitment, hard work, and new technology.
What happened to this valley in Australia should also happen to our Yellow River and, in fact, it is happening. I have seen farmers planting trees on mountains along the Yellow River. I have seen them climb the mountain tops with seedlings on their shoulders because they had no machinery. I have seen them pour on trees the water they had carried up in buckets from miles down the valley. These farmers are quietly nourishing our Yellow River, just as the river has nourished them.
And these farmers, men and women I dont know, gave me the confidence that we and our Yellow River will grow together, and someday in the future, we will be able to drink the clean water from our Yellow River again, because she is our dearest mother.

We've all been taught that we should help people. It is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. It may even win us favors in return. However, we must be realistic.
We can't say yes to every request. If we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure. Sometimes we sim*** don't have the time to help. In this case, we must know how to say no politely.

okay, same thing is true in our workplaces. now, most of us work in open plan offices, without walls, where we are subject to the constant noise and gaze of our coworkers. and when it comes to leadership, introverts are routinely passed over for leadership positions, even though introverts tend to be very careful, much less likely to take outsize risks -- which is something we might all favor nowadays. and interesting research by adam grant at the wharton school has found that introverted leaders often deliver better outcomes than extroverts do, because when they are managing proactive employees, they're much more likely to let those employees run with their ideas, whereas an extrovert can, quite unwittingly, get so excited about things that they're putting their own stamp on things, and other people's ideas might not as easily then bubble up to the surface.

In XX I was in Yushu during that terrible earthquake.I experienced the full horror of buildings falling and people being trapped.I witnessed the quick response from modern technology when people inside yushu called people outside for help with their mobile phones.Very soon the whole world was responding whole heartedly.After only 5 hours,there was another sound- this time it was helicopters bringing doctors,medical supplies,and the facilities to evacuate the wounded to hospital.
Recent advances in earthquake detection and rescue technology have been developed in response to the need to save lives quickly.
Consider advances in green food technology,guided by the need for clean natural food and to protect the environment;Advances in water conservation and purification,guided by the need for clean drinking water and for crops and livestock;advances in delivering education to everyone,especially the use of video and the internet for distance learning;advances in medicine,especially affordable medicine for AIDS sufferers in Africa;and advances in building technology guided by the need to keep people safe and warm.
All these are the result of responding to human needs with kindness and caring and guiding technology for the benefit of mankind.
When I think about the world of advanced technology today,I think of my home,the remote and harsh environment of the Tibetan Plateau,and farmers living in tents with solar energy that they use to power their lights,TV,computers and to improve their lifestyle.I think of farmers talking on their mobile phones,discussing the weather patterns,the cost of food,community news and events.They even talk about Steve Jobs.The train to Lhasa,itself a wonderful engineering feat,brings modern medicine and education to these remote areas.The communities are now interlinked and connected,one of the most basic human needs.
Human beings have a need to be connected,to be safe to be cared for in times of trouble and hardship.
The development of technology must be guided by these needs.If this is not so,then the development of technology is in the hands of mean and,greedy people.The focus of technological development would be wars and weapons,fraud the misuse of information,and the exploitation of people,such as cheap labor.
It can only be humanism which provides the guidance we all need for a better world.
And it is you,who have the responsibility to use the technology wisely,to spread the kindness and caring.
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude to me is more important than facts.
It is more important than the past,than education,than money,than circumstances, than failures,than successes,than what the other people think,say,or do.
It is more important than the appearance,the giftedness or skill.
It will make or break a company,a church ,a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day, regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past.We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one stage we have.And that is our attitudes.
I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me ,and ninety percent how I react to it.And so it is with you.
We are in charge of our attitudes.
In the world, I am sure that no one dare say he hasn't met any trouble allhis life. So we must face failure. In fact, failure is not fearful, butimportant thing is how to face it correctly. Facing failure, people will nevertake their fate lying down.They will try their best to work harder and harderuntil at last they succeed.
Not being courageous to face setbacks, people have no chance to enjoy thepleasure of success. So they have nothing to do but feel sad and empty all dayand all night. In fact, they lose the chance of success themselves.
My friend, whenever in trouble, please remember, “Failure is the mother ofsuccess.”
Twists and turns in life are unavoidable and are not always bad. We shouldhave a more optimistic view on life and try to make the most of it and drawlessons from the bumps and turns along the way.
If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is theability to profit by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because theperson was able to ***yze defeat and actually profit by it in his nextundertaking. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure.For it isn't defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeatthe guide and encouragement to success. Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of.They are routine incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. Butdefeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without humiliation, ***yze it andlearn why you failed.
Defeat, in other words, can help to cure its own cause. Not only doesdefeat prepare us for success, but nothing can arouse within us such acompelling desire to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a rod and try to pull itaway, he will cling more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended.It is this same reaction which should give you new and greater strength everytime you are defeated. If you exploit the power which defeat gives, you canaccomplish with it far more than you are capable of.

Consider the lowly toilet.Many of you may not think of the toilet as a form of technology if you think of toilets at all.But,it is and has contributed greatly to the improved health and overall quality of life for mankind.
On a recent trip to Japan,I was impressed by,among other things,a gadget in most public women's restrooms,called Otohime or Sound Princess.This device produces the sound of flushing water without the need for actual flushing.The technology saves the user both the embarrassment of being heard during urination and some 20 liters of water per use in cases where a woman might flush the toilet continuously while using it.
Every time I used Otohime,I felt like a princess,an environmentalist princess on the toilet.
It was a longed for feeling.Over the past decade,I shuffled in and out of many kinds of public restrooms in China--filthy smelly water closets in outlying areas,spacious luxurious lavatories in five-star hotels,forever-occupied girls' stalls on campus during school,and smart modern mobile toilets in international fairs.But not one single "room" evoked my pride of being a princess.
And I knew why the Sound Princess had.It was not because of the high technology the small bathroom boasted which is becoming ubiquitous worldwide.It was the idealism embodied in the technology that keeps reminding me that in this ever-changing world,I am a responsible and dignified human being even when sitting on a toilet.
Humanism,no matter how it is defined,aims to strike a balance between us being at the mercy of nature and being too human-centered.In my case,I haven't relieved myself under a tree for a while.I am a proud,dutiful Chinese citizen.Gone are the days when people just found a corner to do their business resulting in poor sanitation and threats to public health.The Otohimetechnology renders me two warnings:First,I am a humble human being with an obligation to save not only my face but also natural resources.Second,there is still a long way to go in my own country not just in developing technology and the economy,but also in upholding human dignity and promoting human welfare.Take the toilet:Dirty,crowdedtoilets shall,at least,give way to clean,human-friendly ones.
Fortunately,I have seen improvements.At Shanghai World Expo 20xx,8,000 toilets,all modern and technologically sophisticated,were installed across the site.What really delighted the visitors,however,was the user-friendly design and services.Toilets were situated every 100 meters.Several hundred volunteers served as toilet guides and sanitation workers.The ratio of female to male toilet space was set at 2.5 to 1.Soft music was played in the toilets.All this seems to celebrate the glory of comprehensive humanism.
Ladies and gentlemen,science and technology are here to improve earthly life and maximize human happiness.When our world benefits from technology,coupled with human considerations,we are bound to enjoy our life.Conversely,we suffer.
The toilet is a piece of sanitaryware and the quintessence of humanism that underlies technological innovation.Like GNP,employment rates,and space exploration efforts,the lowly equipment is an equally important measure of a progressive society.When on a toilet if we feel like a princess,we shall be proud of living in a society that values humanity.If not,we must stand up and make some changes.
And if you are still baffled with what I have said,I suggest you take off right now and go experience the bathrooms in this auditorium,because they are what makes our life beautiful or ugly,humanism considered or ignored.
