The man who is aware of himself is henceforth independent; and he is never bored, and life is only too short, and he is steeped through and hrough with profound yet temperate happiness. Healone lives, while other people, slaves of ceremony, let life slip past time in a kind of dream. Once conform ,once do what other people do finer than they do it, and a lethargy steals over all the finer nerves and faculties of the soul, He becomes all outer show and inward emptiness; dull, callous, and indifferent.

A red dragon in the global economy

Many Chinese believe that for China to be strong its trade account must not be in the red. It must have a trade surplus to grow prosperous. So if we look back at 5000 years of Chinese history, it would be surprising that the time China’s trade was in the red was also just when the ‘middle kingdom’ was at its peak during that dynasty.

For example, during Han Dynasty, China ran a trade deficit for centuries with neighboring countries, and it was also the time China became the center of the Asia. Another obvious example is the Tang and Song Dynasty (from 7th century to 11th century), when China was again in a trade deficit with nearly all its neighbors. China was then experiencing shortages of gold, silver or even bronze, but none of this had blocked the red dragon from being the strongest nation at that time. But at the end of Song Dynasty, just decades before the Chinese were invaded and defeated by Mongolians, China became the main exporter in Asia and it was one of the several periods when China was weak. Historians cannot sim*** conclude this as coincidence.

Recent history tells the same story. The end of 19th century was a nightmare for the ancient nation. Many blamed the trade deficit that resulted from opium trade as the plague which caused the weakness of China’s economy in the late Qing Dynasty. However, if we put opium trade aside, China was still a large exporter in the world while it imported little from the outside world. At some point, China’s trade partners had to use opium as a way to pay for their trade deficit with China. Earlier, in the middle of the 18th century, China could produce enough opium for domestic market and also become an exporter in normal definition, but it didn’t help China to be a stronger nation at all. When China launched its first industrialization campaign, it’s trade soon turned into red again, but this happened during the last struggle of Qing Dynasty in its dying years.

After its opening-up in 1978, China was in the red again for eleven years, with the exception of 1983. The government is implementing of a strategy of stimulating exports initially from China’s opening-up. It is a reasonable policy for a post-communism economy which is lack of an efficient fiancé system and a minimum-required foreign currency reserve.

Since 1990, China has been chalking up trade surplus with the exception of 1993. In 2004, the trade surplus of China amounts to $70 billion, of which $58.6 billion from Sino-US trade. With its expanding of trade surplus, its economic rapid growth continues for decades. At the same time, Chinese factories are famous for dumping cheap goods from advantages of its low-cost labors and poor environment standard. After all, China is developing, much faster than EU, US, Japan or any other major power of the world. There is no doubt that China is regaining its strength and will be a major economic power in the 21st century.

What will China bring to the globalization of economy? Even for a country of 1.2 billion population and 960 square kilometers, there is no unlimited sup*** of cheap labor or unlimited tolerance of environment pollution. However, the demand of the 1.2 billion population market in a fast-growing economy could be the powerful engine of the global economy in human history. Some of Chinese key officials and scholars has turned to pro-deficit attitude on this debate and more and more people realize that China has no responsibility to sup*** the world with cheap goods while the living standard of Chinese people are below average level. While those booming Chinese companies have shown their appetites for raw materials on the global market, the extravagance of Chinese wealthy family in cities has given hopes to global manufacturers.

Most of the pressure to grow imports comes from China’s trade partners, especially US and Japan. A strong wind calling for the revaluation of RMB has been blowing since the beginning of 2003, and some even criticize China as an exporter of deflation. At the same time, huge amounts of hot money flow into China despite capital controls that strictly limit money flows into this country. Chinese officials have openly refused to revaluate RMB under pressure and some even say that its a conspiracy to sacrifice China’s economy without bringing benefits to the global economy. But those strong words against the revaluation of RMB were more or less for internal politics. The government then began to boost the imports to ease the pressure on the currency.

Domestically, there are more and more criticisms against the stimulating-export policies, especially the tax reimbursement policy. The tax reimbursement to exporters has aggravated the fiscal deficit of the central government. The government has paid 125 billion RMB and 115 billion RMB for tax reimbursement. This appropriation was far from the amount incurred every year and up to the end of 2003, the tax reimbursement in arrears reached to 340 billion RMB ($41.06 billion). The profit margin rates of many exporters are below the reimbursement rate. As the default of payment accumulated year-by-year, some exporters have fallen into liquidity problem while waiting for the payment of tax reimbursement in arrears.

So China should not be afraid to become red in trade, like it has during many periods of greatness. If the dragon becomes be red for years or even decades, the most foreseeable consequence is that RMB will be an international currency. To support an international currency, China should build ‘a stable macroeconomic environment, an efficient market mechanism and a healthy banking system’ as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao mentioned as the preconditions for a revaluation of RMB. It is easy to say what’s good but it is difficult to identify the problems and solve them. When the growth is still enough to sustain the system, who will be brave enough to cut the mess behind the rise? China should not be afraid to become red again.

  Love, love, love

Please forgive me because I’m not talking about the popular song here. I really love that song, though! What I want to bring to you people here is something I’d like to discuss with.

Love is indeed a big concept. Thus it makes some people confused or feel blur. As I have mentioned before in this forum, I don’t even differ “love” from “like” sometimes. Can you?

I know nobody who doesn’t want his life filled with love. One is/has been/will be receiving love from his parents, relatives, friends, colleagues, lovers and whatsoever living creatures, including animals. Fully enjoying love from around me is what I always long for. How happy and joyful I would be if I could have love everywhere in this planet!

Love conquers everything in human’s world. The more civilized and developed a country is, the more love you will see in there. I saw many charity organizations in Singapore and Canada, and I believe there must be many in other developed countries. There is, however, so few in China. Even though there are some similar organizations in China, I’m afraid they are not doing their jobs.

The most popular case we can see in China is Leukemia. I have all along been donating money to those patients, since I was a student. I just feel that’s the only way I can use to help them.

The other case is raised by baggers, who are wandering in the streets all the time. They are everywhere in the cities. They are annoying sometimes, because they would even pull your pants to hold you back if you refuse to give them cashes. I pay more respect to those who would rather go collecting rubbishes at nights than being criminals to steal or rob, or commit whatever bad things against the local citizens. Once a 80 over years old woman was seen lying on the side of a road. I saw her too, for several times. She seldom bagged for money, she wanted foods and clothes more than cashes. Each time I passed by, I would give her 10 Yuan, not for pitying her, but do what I could to be of help. She died one year later. I was sad when I heard the news because I couldn’t imagine what kind of children she had would abandon their parents! She must be very sad and desperate when she left her home; she must be tough and strong to survive in such a big cold city alone for years; she must be thinking about something before her death; she must be…

If there is another life for this wretched poor woman after her death, I hope she would have a much better life by then. May her soul rest in peace.

When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after anargument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors maymean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior. A friends unusually docile behaviormay only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormalamount of assertiveness. Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern ofresponses and defy logic. For example, a person who says No! to a serials of charges likeYoure dumb, Youre lazy, and Youre dishonest, may also say No! and try to justify hisor her response if the next statement is And youre good looking.

  Make your fate in control

Fate is determined by character, and character is determined by knowledge, desire and habit. If a person wants to change his fate, he has to change his character first; and if he wants to change his character, he has to change his knowledge or his desires and habits. Complaining to other people or the environments makes no sense.

Actually, everybody in this world will know about the meaning of life. It’s just the matter of time. A worker, who had just lost his job, met a university professor one day. He admitted that he didn’t love to study when he was a student. He just hated to study no matter what and how his father asked him to. When he got a job and became a worker, he realized how important to have knowledge in this world. But, it was too late…

There are no parents who don’t think studying is important for their children, and all the parents tell their children to study hard. We, however, still have so much difference on different children, on the results, that we finally will know it’ is the matter of self-control.

When we are kids in a primary school, we see no difference from each other. We just know somebody is good at Chinese, Math or Sports. We just know that the teacher likes him or her. Nowadays, we differentiate our classmates by their parents. We say: oh, god, his father is the vice mayor, his father is very rich; his mother is the dean of the biggest hospital…. This is definitely not a good sign for China and the Chinese people, because it makes no competition for the youngsters, who are having China’s future in hand.

The poor always hate the rich, because they see the rich driving all the luxury cars, living in condominiums, villas and spending money like they are countless. And the poor see the rich always on vocations, always so relaxed and enjoyable. So the poor are jealous and they wonder how can the rich be so rich and the poor are so poor. Well, the poor obviously forget one thing: When the rich are working hard and smart to collect money, the poor are lying somewhere and making complains.

Make your fate and success in control; you can make a difference in the future, unless you want to a poor person, both mentally and physically.

The only thing legible on the torn envelope was the return address.I opened the letter and saw that it had been written in 1944 — almost 60 years ago.I read it carefully, hoping to find some clue to the identity of the wallets owner.

It was a "Dear John" letter. The writer,in a delicate script, told the recipient, whose name was Michael, that her mother forbade her to see him again.Nevertheless, she would always love him.It was signed Hannah.

It was a beautiful letter. But there was no way, beyond the name Michael,to identify the owner.Perhaps if I called information the operator could find the phone number for the address shown on the envelope.

"Operator, this is an unusual request.Im trying to find the owner of a wallet I found. Is there any way you could tell me the phone number for an address that was on a letter in the wallet?"

The operator gave me her supervisor, who said there was a phone listed at the address, but that she could not give me the number. However, she would call and explain the situation. Then,if the party wanted to talk, she would connect me.I waited a minute and she came back on the line."I have a woman who will speak with you."

I asked the woman if she knew a Hannah.

"Oh,of course! We bought this house from Hannahs family thirty years ago."

"Would you know where they could be located now?" I asked.

"Hannah had to place her mother in a nursing home years ago.Maybe the home could help you track down the daughter."

The woman gave me the name of the nursing home.I called and found out that Hannahs mother had died. The woman I spoke with gave me an address where she thought Hannah could be reached.

I phoned. The woman who answered explained that Hannah herself was now living in a nursing home. She gave me the number.I called and was told,"Yes,Hannah is with us."

I asked if I could stop by to see her.It was almost 10 p.m.The director said Hannah might be asleep."But if you want to take a chance, maybe shes in the day room watching television."

The director and a guard greeted me at the door of the nursing home.We went up to the third floor and saw the nurse, who told us that Hannah was indeed watching TV.

We entered the day room.Hannah was a sweet,silver-haired old-timer with a warm smile and friendly eyes.I told her about finding the wallet and showed her the letter. The second she saw it,she took a deep breath."Young man," she said,"this letter was

The waterfall behind our house at the lower end of Lake Edenwold is a thundering cascade of spring runoff from the melting snows of winter. It's been a three-week drum roll leading up to today, when the cymbal will crash and the earth will arrive at that point in its orbit around the sun where it will be light for as many hours as it will be dark.

Today is really the celestial climax to a prelude whose crescendo has been growing now for a month in the forests and lakes all around us.Beginning in late February and through the month of March on my Saturday morning hikes through the lower Highlands,I have watched spring slowly unfold before my eyes.

A pair of hooded mergansers suddenly appeared on our lake earlier this month and I heard the unmistakable call of a wood duck.Several thousand feet overhead,an enormous, migratory flock of Canada geese undulated like strands of limp black thread suspended against a steel gray sky; their wild honking clearly audible in spite of the flock's altitude.

Just a little more than one week ago,as I came to a place in the woods where the forest suddenly yields to what is a wild flower meadow in the late spring and summer, the bare trees were filled with hundreds of red-winged blackbirds, their cacophonous chatter filling the otherwise still morning air.It was an eerie harbinger of spring, reminiscent of the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds." Later that same afternoon,a small flock of cedar waxwings, another migratory species of songbirds stopped for a rest in a nearby tree only two blocks from our house.

Man has always been fascinated with the arrival of spring.King Solomon weighed in on it when he wrote these words from his "Song" in the Old Testament: "See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance."

The arrival of spring has always marked a rebirth of sorts, not just for nature but also for us humans. It is a time of awakening,a time to forget the old and to embrace the new.

For most kids it's sim*** a time when they can play outside longer, riding their new bicycles and skateboards or shooting hoops in driveway basketball courts. For some adults it can be a serious time,a release from the seasonal depression caused by the reduced hours of sunlight during the dark months of winter.

But for most of us,it is a release from the mundane things that after three months have added up to the point where we are all just ready for a change. You know: things like having to wear layers of heavy clothing,white-knuckle drives to work on icy roads, and leaving home mornings in the dark only to drive back home again in darkness later the same afternoon.

The crocus and daffodils will soon start peeking their heads above last year's pine bark nuggets and what's left of the winter snow still piled in the beds under the white pines out by the road.

They are yet another prelude to the appearance of more flowers and birds: the warblers and the tanagers that will shortly appear in the trees around my home.

I can't wait to inhale the aromas of things like the warming earth, new mown grass, and fresh piles of damp cedar mulch. And I am looking forward to that first morning when I can sit outside on my deck with a cup of coffee and feel comfortable without having to don a fleece or a heavy woolen shirt.

Whatever your passion in life, take time like the busy King Solomon to pause from it for a moment over the next few weeks and just sit and watch and enjoy the spectacle of spring unfold before your eyes.

  And give thanks.

December 13,an ordinary day in this special year, doesn’t mean anything much to me.I went to work at 8:30am as usual, prepared for an important official meeting and called several of my business partners. My mind was filled with all of paper work stuff until I saw the calendar on my desk.Oh,no! It’s going to be the year end!

Too many unforgettable things have happened on me that I don’t even know which I should recall first.I joined the government, went to South Africa,Hawaii, interpreted for the vice mayor of the city, met lots of foreign businessmen, divorced with Maggie and decided to leave for where I was in year 2001.

Life is quite sarcastic, because my career journey looks like a big circle.I joined the Labor Bureau as an intern in 1997; I left for Singapore the next year and came home in 2000.I stayed in FX for 4 years and ended up resigned for Maggie (because a couple is not allowed to work in the same dept in FX).Now I came back to government. When I looked back at the road I had been walking on,I saw a big circle!

2005,the governmental events year! I’ve experienced the Korean Week,Japanese Week, the CIEME (China International Equipment Manufacturing Expo),The CEO Forum of the World Top 500 Companies,Shenyang Utilizes Agents to get investment meeting…etc. Now I know I can make my resume more complicated but attractive!

My marriage is considered a total failure this year! I take it as my fate and start to face my new life. It’s really hard, though! Leaving a girl who’d been with me for 5 years is not an easy-to-make decision! The lesson is costly. The wounds, cuts and whatever injures caused by my marriage will be sewed up soon.Anyway,I said farewell to her,and to the year 2005.

Minority youths are more likely to face trial as adults

A WHITE KID SELLS A BAG OF E at his suburban high school.A Latino kid does the same in his inner-city neighborhood. Both get caught. Both are first-time offenders. The white kid walks into juvenile court with his parents, his priest,a good lawyer-and medical coverage. The Latino kid walks into court with his mom,no legal resources and no insurance. The judge lets the white kid go with his family; he s placed in a private treatment program. The minority kid has no such option. He s detained.

There,in a nutshell,is what happens more and more often in the juvenile-court system.Minority youths arrested on violent felony charges in California are more than twice as likely as their white counterparts to be transferred out of the juvenile-justice system and tried as adults, according to a study released last week by the Justice Policy Institute,a research center in San Francisco.Once they are in adult courts, young black offenders are 18 times more likely to be jailed-and Hispanics seven times more likely-than are young white offenders.Discrimination against kids of color accumulates at every stage of the justice system and skyrockets when juveniles are, tried as adults, says Dan Macallair,a co-author of the new study.California has a double standard: throw kids of color behind bars, but .rehabilitate white kids who commit comparable crimes.

My mom only had one eye.I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.

She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came.I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me?I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me,“your mom only has one eye?!” and taunted me.

I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom,“Why don’t you have the other eye?!If you’re only gonna make me a laughingstock!” My mon did not respond, I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have had said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.

For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University, I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there.

I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom!And still with her one eye!It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.

I screamed at her,“Who are you? I don’t know you!How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter!” To this, my mom quietly answered,“Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. Lying to my wife that I was going on a business trip, I went back to participate in the reunion. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, which I used to call a house, just out of curiosity. There I found my mom fallen on the cold ground. I did not shed a single tear.

Then a piece of paper in her hand came into my eyes. It was a letter to me.

  My son,

I think my life has been long enough now,and I won’t visit Seoul anymore. But would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come to visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school…for you. I’m so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you.

You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident and lost your eye. As a mom, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. During the couple of times that you were angry with me, I thought to myself, it’s because he loves me.

  My son…oh, my son…

Don’t cry for me because of my death. I love you so much.

Once upon a time, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for using up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight, and he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that the child had pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a shoebox to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"

As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction.

But when he opened it, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady, " he said harshly, "when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package!"

The little girl looked up at him with tears rolling from her eyes and said: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."

The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept that little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.

I live in Hollywood. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.

Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.

Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.

I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful inpiduals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness".

But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children, profound loneliness.

The way people cling to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equates happiness actually diminishes their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very endeavors that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, civic or charitable work, and self-improvement.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room‘s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn‘t hear the band - he could see it in his mind‘s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly and painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold.

Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago.

With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words… "PAID IN FULL".

How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? I trust you enjoyed this. Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect "the packaging" to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened.

Once upon a time there was a baby eagle living in a nest perched on a cliff overlooking a beautiful valley with waterfalls and streams, trees and lots of little animals, scurrying about enjoying their lives.

The baby eagle liked the nest. It was the only world he had ever known. It was warm and comfortable, had a great view, and even better, he had all the food and love and attention that a great mother eagle could provide. Many times each day the mother would swoop down from the sky and land in the nest and feed the baby eagle delicious morsels of food. She was like a god to him, he had no idea where she came from or how she worked her magic.

The baby eagle was hungry all the time, but the mother eagle would always come just in time with the food and love and attention he craved. The baby eagle grew strong. His vision grew very sharp. He felt good all the time.

Until one day, the mother stopped coming to the nest.

The baby eagle was hungry. "I'm sure to die," said the baby eagle, all the time.

"Very soon, death is coming," he cried, with tears streaming down his face. Over and over. But there was no one there to hear him.

Then one day the mother eagle appeared at the top of the mountain cliff, with a big bowl of delicious food and she looked down at her baby. The baby looked up at the mother and cried "Why did you abandon me? I'm going to die any minute. How could you do this to me?"

The mother said, "Here is some very tasty and nourishing food, all you have to do is come get it."

"Come get it!" said the baby, with much anger. "How?"

  The mother flew away.

The baby cried and cried and cried.

A few days later, "I'm going to end it all," he said. "I give up. It is time for me to die."

He didn't know his mother was nearby. She swooped down to the nest with his last meal.

"Eat this, it's your last meal," she said.

The baby cried, but he ate and whined and whined about what a bad mother she was.

"You're a terrible mother," he said. Then she pushed him out of the nest.

  He fell.

  Head first.

  Picked up speed.

  Faster and faster.

He screamed. "I'm dying I'm dying," he cried. He picked up more speed.

He looked up at his mother. "How could you do this to me?"

  He looked down.

The ground rushed closer, faster and faster. He could visualize his own death so clearly, coming so soon, and cried and whined and complained. "This isn't fair!" he screamed.

  Something strange happens.

The air caught behind his arms and they snapped away from his body, with a feeling unlike anything he had ever experienced. He looked down and saw the sky. He wasn't moving towards the ground anymore, his eyes were pointed up at the sun.

"Huh?" he said. "What is going on here!"

  "You're flying," his mother said.

"This is fun!" laughed the baby eagle, as he soared and ped and swooped.

"Yes it is!" said the mother.

The Language of Music

A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm-two entirely different movements.

Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear.

This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.

Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.

"Joey, Joey," said a mysterious voice. I opened my eyes with a struggle.

  "What happened?" I asked.

"You were shaking and sweating like crazy. And saying something like, 'No, please don't shoot me!' and stuff like that," said Steve.

"Uh," I groaned as I turned over and belched on Steve's shoes.

"Hey!" screamed Steve, "Those are my new Nike Air shoes!"

"where are we anyways?" I asked.

"We're waiting for our ship to get ready, duh!"

I nearly forgot. Both Steve and I were taking a cruise to Iceland.

"The Great White is to departure to Iceland!" shouted the P.A.

"That's our cue!" I shouted in excitement, "Iceland, here we come!"

"Toilet, here I come..." I groaned as I fumbled my way down the aisles of the ship.

"I told you not to eat too much food and then run around like a lunatic!" shouted Steve. "People these days," he mumbled, "what they do for attention."

"Passengers, we are just 1 hour away from reaching Iceland," said the P.A, "would all passengers please stay seated for the next hour."

"I hope they have a built in toilet in each seat," I said nervously, "because I feel another load coming on."

"Don't worry Joey, just keep thinking about-," he was cut short by a violent shake.

  "What was that?" I asked.

"Evacuate! Evacuate! We've just hit an iceberg! Evacuate! Evacuate!" shouted the P.A. And in the blink of an eye, everyone was up on their feet and running towards the lifeboats at the sides of the ship.

"Come on Joey! Let's get out of here!" shouted Steve. I ran as fast as I could, while dodging all of the flying furniture coming towards me. I huffed and puffed as I ran up the platform of the ship, which was becoming more and more vertical with each passing second. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw several tables tumbling towards Steve.

"Steve!" I shouted, "Watch out!" But it was too late. By the time Steve had turned around and faced me, the tables had already collided into him and sent him rolling down the platform. "Steve! No!" I shouted as I watched him being sucked down into the water. I stood there, helplessly, just staring after him. And then I remembered that I had to get out of this ship, or else I'd end up like Steve. So I jumped for my last chance at life. I grabbed a pole and held on fast. And then in a flash, my legs pushed me off of the pole and I splashed in the water. I surfaced, and watched as The Great White slowly sank into the unknown secrets of the Waterworld...

Most of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted just the way we are. Our hearts' desire is to give and receive love in relationships that make us feel that even if others disagree with what we do or say, they still love us. They accept us. They appreciate our contributions to the world. While it would be wonder

ful to have these types of relationships with all people, we know that that's hard to do. We can, however, have them with some others, but only when we first have them with ourselves-and, ironically, this is often the hardest relationship of all.

One of the reasons many of us find it hard to love ourselves is because we do not realize that we are already loved in the most pine way. God loves us, totally and unconditionally.

It's hard for many of us to believe this fact because we know how imperfect we are, and we believe we have to be perfect before God will love us. The truth is that God's love makes us perfect, even with our imperfections. By knowing this truth intellectually and believing it spiritually, we not only love ourselves more; we love others more as well.

Do you love yourself? You may think you do, but do you really? There's only one way to find out-by taking a closer look at what you think, say, and do. You may not like some of what you find, but if you're serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work.

Here are three ways I've found for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love.

Listen to your words and listen even more closely to your thoughts. Why? Because your words and your thoughts will determine your actions. One of the things that has helped me to listen to my thoughts has been to keep a journal. It is not necessary for you to write in it everyday, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about living your life. Instead of using a big notebook, you might use a small note pad that you can keep in your purse or pocket for easy access to record your thoughts as they occur to you. (I've found that if I don't immediately write down ideas and insights as they come, it's hard to remember them later, at least with the same degree of clarity.) Whichever method you choose, what's most important is that you write your thoughts down. It will help you know what's in your heart.

Be honest with yourself by paying attention to your actions. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. What do your actions say about you? If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more true - your words or your actions? On the other hand, if you say you're not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, that's also important. What do you do with this insight? You can use it to make more beneficial choices in your life. By being honest with yourself based on your previous actions, your actions moving forward will be based on truth instead of just what you tell yourself.

Suppose you set your mind to work on the problem of how you would use your own eyes if you had three more days to see. If with the oncoming darkness of the third night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those three precious intervening days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon?

I, naturally, should want most to see the things which have become dear to me through my years of darkness. You, too, would want to let your eyes rest long on the things that have become dear to you so that you could take the memory of them with you in the night that loomed before you.

I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my teacher, Mrs. Anne Sullivan Macy, who came to me when I was a child and opened the outer world to me. I should want not merely the outline of her face, so that I could cherish it in my memory, but to study that face and find in it the living evidence of the sympathetic tenderness and patience with which she accomplished the difficult task of my education. I should like to see in her eyes that strength of character which has enabled her to stand firm in the face of difficulties, and that compassion for all humanity which she has revealed to me so often.

Oh, the things that I should see if I had the power of sight for just three days!

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. It might even be the greatest of the art since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery.

She aroused us to shouting, bookwaving discussions. She had the noisiest class in school and she didn’t even seem to know it. We could never stick to the subject. She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies.

She was fired and perhaps rightly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. Such things must be learned. But she left a passion in us for the pure knowable world and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left. I could not do simple arithmetic but through her I sensed that abstract mathematics was very much like music.

When she was relieved, a sadness came over us but the light did not go out. She left her signature on us, the literature of the teacher who writes on minds. I suppose that to a lager extent I am the unsigned manuscript of the high school teacher. What deathless power lies in the hands of such a person.

I can tell my son who look s forward with horror to fifteen years of drudgery that somewhere in the dusty dark a magic may happen that will light up the years…if he is very lucky.

  Human Life a Poem

I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem. It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay. It begins with innocent childhood, followed by awkward adolescence trying awkwardly to adapt itself to mature society, with its young passions and follies, its ideals and ambitions; then it reaches a manhood of intense activities, profiting from experience and learning more about society and human nature; at middle age, there is a slight easing of tension, a mellowing of character like the ripening of fruit or the mellowing of good wine, and the gradual acquiring of a more tolerant, more cynical and at the same time a kindlier view of life; then In the sunset of our life, the endocrine glands decrease their activity, and if we have a true philosophy of old age and have ordered our life pattern according to it, it is for us the age of peace and security and leisure and contentment; finally, life flickers out and one goes into eternal sleep, never to wake up again.

One should be able to sense the beauty of this rhythm of life, to appreciate, as we do in grand symphonies, its main theme, its strains of conflict and the final resolution. The movements of these cycles are very much the same in a normal life, but the music must be provided by the inpidual himself. In some souls, the discordant note becomes harsher and harsher and finally overwhelms or submerges the main melody. Sometimes the discordant note gains so much power that the music can no longer go on, and the inpidual shoots himself with a pistol or jump into a river. But that is because his original leitmotif has been hopelessly over-showed through the lack of a good self-education. Otherwise the normal human life runs to its normal end in kind of dignified movement and procession. There are sometimes in many of us too many staccatos or impetuosos, and because the tempo is wrong, the music is not pleasing to the ear; we might have more of the grand rhythm and majestic tempo o the Ganges, flowing slowly and eternally into the sea.

No one can say that life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement; the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season. And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can deny that human life can be lived like a poem. Shakespeare has expressed this idea more graphically in his passage about the seven stages of life, and a good many Chinese writers have said about the same thing. It is curious that Shakespeare was never very religious, or very much concerned with religion. I think this was his greatness; he took human life largely as it was, and intruded himself as little upon the general scheme of things as he did upon the characters of his plays. Shakespeare was like Nature itself, and that is the greatest compliment we can pay to a writer or thinker. He merely lived, observed life and went away.

It was one week before high school graduation when I found the note。 I didn’t know it then, but by the end of that week, my life would be changed forever。

I had been cleaning out my locker, looking through old papers and taking down all the pictures I had taped to the door。 Everything seemed to hold memories from the past year, so I was careful not to throw away anything with sentimental value。 I found the note on the top shelf of my locker, laying on top of my biology book。 It had my name , Marly, printed neatly at the top, and though I didn’t recognize the handwriting, I thought that it was probably from one of my friends。 But as I read it, I realized that it couldn’t be。 It was signed, 'from a secret admirer。' I knew I shouldn’t take it seriously, but I couldn’t stop my heart from beating fast or my face from turning red。

I kept thinking that it was just a prank。 But who could’ve written something so sweet and touching just for a good laugh? I heard laughter from the end of the hall, but when I looked down there I saw that those laughing were paying no attention to me。

That evening I kept replaying the words of the note in my head。 I reread it so many times during my last hour class, I almost had it memorized。

We never spent any time together, it said, but in my mind we did。。。 In my mind we shared so much。。。 from our first kiss to popcorn at the movie theater on our first date。 We laughed at inside jokes that no one else got, you taught me how to dance in my backyard。 Of course, none of those things really happened。。。 I only imagined them。 Outside of my mind we never existed as a couple, you never even knew my true feelings for you。 And I’m afraid you never will if I don’t tell you now。 Please meet me Friday night after the prom, in the park。

I spent that entire evening thinking about the note and who could’ve written it。 It wasn’t every day I got a note from someone who had been admiring me from afar。

The next day at school, I showed the note to my best friend, Christy。 We sat down by our lockers, musing over who the mysterious person could be。 Every time a boy walked by I contemplated the question: Could it be him? I tried to act like it wasn’t important to me。 After all, it could just be a cruel joke someone was playing on me and I would look stupid if I made a big deal out of it。

By the end of third hour, everyone knew about the note I had received。 At noon, a crowd had gathered around my locker。 Some wanted to see the note but I was cautious of who I let read it。 I guarded it as if it were some great treasure, and to me, it was。

"What if its him?" Diane Johansen said, pointing in his direction and laughing。 She started doing a dead―on impersonation of Jimmy。 I couldn’t help but laugh as Diane talked with a stutter and shook, as Jimmy often did。 I instantly regretted it。 I looked at him。 I didn’t see love or admiration in his eyes, I saw pain。

My grandmother became a widow in 1970。 Shortly after that, we went to the animal shelter to pick out a puppy to keep her company。 Grandma decided on a little terrier that had a reddish―brown spot above each eye。 Because of these spots, the dog was promptly named Penny。

Grandma and Penny quickly became very attached to each other, but that attachment grew much stronger about three years later when Grandma had a stroke。 Grandma could no longer work, so when she came home from the hospital, she and Penny were constant companions。

After her stroke, it became a real problem for Grandma to let Penny in and out because the door was at the bottom of a flight of stairs。 So a mechanism using a rope and pulley was installed from the back door to a handle at the top of the stairs。 Grandma just had to pull the handle to open and close the door。 If the store was out of Penny's favorite dog food, Grandma would make one of us cook Penny browned beef with diced potatoes in it。 I can remember teasing my grandmother that she loved that dog better than she loved her family。

As the years passed, Grandma and Penny became inseparable。 Grandma's old house could be filled to the brim with people, but if Grandma went to take her nap, Penny walked along beside her and stayed by her side until she awoke。 As Penny aged, she could no longer jump up on the bed to lay next to Grandma, so she laid on the rug beside the bed。 If Grandma went into the bathroom, Penny would hobble along beside her, wait outside the door and accompany her back to the bed or chair。 Grandma never went anywhere without her faithful companion by her side。

The time came when both my grandmother and Penny's health were failing fast。 Penny couldn't get around very well, and Grandma had been hospitalized several times。 My uncle and I lived with Grandma, so Penny was never left alone, even when Grandma was in the hospital。 During these times, Penny sat at the window looking out for the car bringing Grandma home and would excitedly wait at the door when Grandma came through it。 Each homecoming was a grand reunion between the two。

On Christmas Day in 1985, Grandma was again taken to the hospital。 Penny, as usual, sat watching out the window for the car bringing Grandma home。 Two mornings later when the dog woke up, she couldn't seem to work out the stiffness in her hips as she usually did。 The same morning, she began having seizures。 At age fifteen, we knew it was time。 My mother and aunt took her to the veterinarian and stayed with her until the end。

Now the big dilemma was whether to tell Grandma while she was still in the hospital or wait。 The decision was made to tell her while she was in the hospital because when we pulled up at the house, the first thing Grandma would look for was her beloved Penny watching out the window and then happily greeting her at the door。 Grandma shed some tears but said she knew that it had to be done so Penny wouldn't suffer。

That night while still in the hospital, Grandma had a massive heart attack。 The doctors frantically worked on her but could not revive her。 After fifteen years of loving companionship, Grandma and Penny passed away within a few hours of each other。 God had it all worked out C Penny was waiting at door when Grandma came Home。

No young man believes he shall ever die。 It was a saying of my brother's and a fine one。 There is a feeling of Eternity in youth which makes us amends for everything。 To be young is to be as one of the Immortals。 One half of time indeed is spent ―― the other half remains in store for us will all its countless treasures, for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes。 We make the coming age our own ――

"The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us。"

Death, old age, are words without a meaning, a dream, a fiction, with which we have nothing to do。 Others may have undergone, or may still undergo them ―― we "bear a charmed life," which laughs to scorn all such idle fancies。 As, in setting out on a delightful journey, we strain our eager sight forward,

"Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail,"

and see no end to prospect after prospect, new objects presenting themselves as we advance, so in the outset of life we see no end to our desires nor to the opportunities of gratifying them。 We have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag, and it seems that we can go on so for ever。 We look round in a new world, full of life and motion, and ceaseless progress, and feel in ourselves all the vigour and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present signs how we shall be left behind in the race, decline into old age, and drop into the grave。 It is the simplicity and, as it were, abstractedness of our feelings in youth that (so to speak) identifies us with Nature and (our experience being weak and our passions strong) makes us fancy ourselves immortal like it。 Our short―lived connexion with being, we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union。 As infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our desires, and hushed into fancied security by the roar of the universe around us ―― we quaff the cup of life with eager thirst without draining it, and joy and hope seem ever mantling to the brain ―― objects press around us, filing the mind with their magnitude and with the throng of desires that wait upon them so that there is no room for the thoughts of death。 We are too much dazzled by the gorgeousness and novelty of the bright waking dream about us to discern the dim shadow lingering for us in the distance。 Nor would the hold that life has taken of us permit us to detach our thoughts that way, even if we could。 We are too much absorbed in present objects and pursuits。 While the spirit of youth remains unimpaired, ere "the wine of life is drunk," we are like people intoxicated or in a fever, who are hurried away by the violence of their own sensations: it is only as present objects begin to pall upon the senses, as we have been disappointed in our favourite pursuits, cut off from our closest ties that we by degrees become weaned from the world, that passion loosens its hold upon futurity, and that we begin to contemplate as in a glass darkly the possibility of parting with it for good。 Till then, the example of others has no effect upon us。 Casualties we avoid; the slow approaches of age we play at hide and seek with。 Like the foolish fat scullion in Sterne, who hears that Master Bobby is dead, our only reflection is, "So am not I!" The idea of death, instead of staggering our confidence, only seems to strengthen and enhance our sense of the possession and enjoyment of life。 Others may fall around us like leaves, or be mowed down by the scythe of Time like grass: these are but metaphors to the unreflecting, buoyant ears and overweening presumption of youth。 It is not till we see the flowers of Love, Hope and Joy withering around us, that we give up the flattering delusions that before led us on, and that the emptiness and dreariness of the prospect before us reconciles us hypothetically to the silence of the grave。

This is allegedly actual text from an American home economics text book, circa 1950。

Have dinner ready。 Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time。 This is a way of letting him know you've been thinking about him and concerned about his needs。 Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed。

Prepare yourself。 Take fifteen minutes to rest so that you will be refreshed when he arrives。 Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking。 He has just been with a lot of work―weary people。 Be a little gay and a little more interesting。 His boring day may need a lift。

Clear away the clutter。 Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gather up school books, toys, paper, etc。 Run a dust cloth over the tables。 Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order; and it will give you a lift too。

Prepare the children。 Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces (if they're small), comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes。 They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part。

Minimize all noise。 At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer, dishwasher, or vacuum。 Try to encourage the children to be quiet。 Be happy to see him。 Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him。

Some Don'ts: Don't greet him with problems and complaints。 Don't complain if he is late for dinner。 Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day。 Make him comfortable。 Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest that he lie down in the bedroom。 Have a cool drink ready for him。 Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes。 Speak in a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice。 Allow him to relax and unwind。

Listen to him。 You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time。 Let him talk first。

Make the evening his。 Never complain if he does not take you out to dinner or other pleasant entertainment。 Instead try to understand his world of strain and pressure, his need to unwind and relax。

The goal! Try to make your home a place of peace and order where your husband can relax in body and spirit。

The silent young woman in bed number six is called Jasmine。 So am I, but names are only superficial things, floats bobbing on the surface of the water, and we share deeper connections than that。 Which is why she fascinates me ― why I spend my off―duty time sitting beside her。

Today is difficult。 The ward heaves with patients and I am kept busy emptying bed―pans, filling out forms, changing dressings。 Finally, late in the afternoon, I get a few moments to make coffee, to take it over to the orange plastic chair beside her bed。 I am thankful to be off my feet, glad to be in her company once again。

‘Hello, Jasmine,’ I say, as if greeting myself。

She does not re***。 Jasmine never replies。 She is down too deep。

Like me, she has been sea―damaged。 I too am the daughter of a fisherman, so I bait my words like fish―hooks, cast them into her ears, imagine them sinking down through cold, dark water。 Down to wherever she may be。

‘I have little time today,’ I tell her, touching her hair。

With Jasmine, it is always difficult not to touch。 She is that rare thing, a truly beautiful woman。 Because of this, people invent reasons to walk by。 I catch them looking, drinking her in, feeding on her。 They are barracuda, all of them。 Wheelchair―pushing porters who slow to a crawl when they near her bed。 Roaming visitors with greedy eyes。 Doctors who stop, draw the thin screen of curtain, and continually re―examine that which does not need examination。

Great beauty is something Jasmine and I do not share。 I am glad of it。

‘Your father may be here soon,’ I say。 ’Last week he said he would come。’

Jasmine says nothing。 Her left eyelid flickers, perhaps。

It is two months since the incident on her father’s fishing boat, since she fell overboard, sank, became entangled in the nets。 It was some time before anyone noticed, then there was panic。 Her father hauled her back on board and sailed for home。 When he finally arrived, he carried ashore what he thought was his daughter’s body。

‘Jasmine,’ I whisper。 I want her to take our baited name。 I want her to swallow it。

Fortunately, there was a doctor in the village that morning, a young man visiting relatives。 It was he who brought this drowned woman back from the brink, he who told me her story。 She opened her eyes, he said, looked up at her father and spoke a single word ― then sank again, this time into coma。

Barracuda。 That is what Jasmine said。

When her father visits, he touches her hair, kisses her cheek, sits in the orange plastic chair at the side of her bed and holds her hand。 Like my own father, he has the big, brown, life―roughened hands of a fisherman。 He too smells of the sea, and pretends he is a good, simple man。

Jasmine。 We share so much, we are almost one。

I remember early mornings, my hair touched to wake me, my father lifting me half―asleep from my bed, carrying me, dropping me into his boat。 His voice rough in my ear, his hands rough on my skin。 I never wanted to go, but I was just a child。 He did as he wished。

I remember salt water, hot sun, my mother shrinking on the shore。 I remember the rocking of the boat, the screams of the gulls。

‘Jasmine, you have a life inside you。 Can’t you hear it calling?’

  Nothing。

The ward door bangs, and I see Jasmine’s father walking towards us, carrying flowers。 He smiles at me。

Even in death, my own child had my father’s smile, and Jasmine’s will have this man’s。 I know it。

He stops by her bed and touches her hair。 Something stirs deep inside me。 I watch Jasmine’s eyelids, waiting for her to bite。

  Evolution and Wheels

In the past, evolutionary biologists contemplating the absence of wheels in nature agreed that the explanation was not undesirability: wheels would be good for animals, just as they are for us. Animals were prevented from evolving wheels, the biologists reasoned, by the following dilemma: living cells in an animal's body are connected to the heart by blood vessels, and to the brain by nerves. Because a rotating joint is essential to a wheel, a wheel made of living cells would twist its artery vein and nerve connections at the first revolution, making living impracticable. However, there is a flaw in the argument that the evolution of wheeled animals was thwarted by the insoluble joint problem. The theory fails to explain why animals have not evolved wheels of dead tissue with no need for arteries and nerves. Countless animals, including us, bear external structures without blood sup* or nerves - for example, our hair and fingernails, or the scales, claws, and ho rns of other animals. Why have rats not evolved bony wheels, similar to roller skates?Paws might be more useful than wheels in some situations, but cats' claws are retractable: why not retractable wheels? We thus arrive at the serious biological paradox flippantly termed the RRR dilemma: nature's failure to produce rats with retractable roller skates.

Archaeology is a source of history, not just a humble auxiliary discipline. Archaeological data are historical documents in their own right, not mere illustrations to written texts. Just as much as any other historian, an archaeologist studies and tries to reconstitute the process that has created the human world in which we live —— and us ourselves in so far as we are each creatures of our age and social environment. Archaeological data are all changes in the material world resulting from human action or, more succinctly, the fossilized results of human behavior. The sum total of these constitutes what may be called the archaeological record. This record exhibits certain peculiarities and deficiencies the consequences of which produce a rather superficial contrast between archaeological history and the more familiar kind based upon written records.

Not all human behavior fossilizes. The words I utter and you hear as vibrations in the air are certainly human changes in the material world and may be of great historical significance. Yet they leave no sort of trace in the archaeological records unless they are captured by a dictaphone or written down by a clerk. The movement of troops on the battlefield may "change the course of history," but this is equally ephemeral from the archaeologist's standpoint. What is perhaps worse, most organic materials are perishable. Everything made of wood, hide, wool, linen, grass, hair, and similar materials will decay and vanish in dust in a few years or centuries, save under very exceptional conditions. In a relatively brief period the archaeological record is reduced to mere scraps of stone, bone, glass, metal, and earthenware. Still modern archaeology, by ap*ing appropriate techniques and comparative methods, aided by a few lucky finds from peat-bogs, deserts, and frozen soils, is able to fill up a good deal of the gap.

From Boston to Los Angeles, from New York City to Chicago to Dallas, museums are either planning, building, or wrapping up wholesale expansion programs. These programs already have radically altered facades and floor plans or are expected to do so in the not-too-distant future.

In New York City alone, six major institutions have spread up and out into the air space and neighborhoods around them or are preparing to do so.

The reasons for this confluence of activity are complex, but one factor is a consideration everywhere -- space. With collections expanding, with the needs and functions of museums changing, empty space has become a very precious commodity.

Probably nowhere in the country is this more true than at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has needed additional space for decades and which received its last significant facelift ten years ago. Because of the space crunch, the Art Museum has become increasingly cautious in considering acquisitions and donations of art, in some cases passing up opportunities to strengthen its collections.

Deaccessing -- or selling off -- works of art has taken on new importance because of the museum's space problems. And increasingly, curators have been forced to juggle gallery space, rotating one masterpiece into public view while another is sent to storage.

Despite the clear need for additional gallery and storage space, however, "the museum has no plan, no plan to break out of its envelope in the next fifteen years," according to Philadelphia Museum of Art's president.

Many people want to believe that finding happiness is all about finding or gettings omething that they want. However, not many people have ever foundlong-termhappiness bya chieving a goal. There will always bean other thing that they want. There will always bean other exam or another dollar.

To breakth is vicious cycle,we must find our happiness somewhereelse—with inourselves. In other words, happiness is pletely an inside job.The key to finding happiness is to understand that happiness is achoice rather than the resul to fan experience. We have be engiven everything

We need to be happy.Allow yourself to choose happiness. If l few asperfect, would you behappy?Life is perfect because we create it withour

choices.Since we can create life,we can create happiness and choose how much better our lives can get!

Only when we can accept that life is perfect as it is,and that our lives are the sum total of everything that has happened up to this moment, can we accept the joy and the happiness we deserve.

  How strong are you?

That is a tough question to answer, whether you are a man or a woman.

But, really, I want to ask… how do you define your strength?

How do you know your limits? How do you know just how much you’ve got?

When push comes to shove, we often discover that we are much stronger than we think.

  What is Strength?

Strength is not always about pure physical strength. Rather, it is about willpower. Discipline. Drive. It is about the capacity to get things done.

I know some people who are intellectually strong, but they get very little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work extremely challenging, but are able to move mountains by their sheer drive and hard work.

  They possess inner strength.

More interesting, is that these productive hard-workers often don’t even notice the load. Bystanders are not only amazed, but often ask, “How do you do it?”

The answer usually comes back, “I just work harder than the others.”

So, why are some people able to do more? What gives them added drive? What gives them extra strength?

Could it be, they have sim*** given themselves permission to do more?

  Self-Imposed Limits

What I have observed is that most people impose their own limits. They limit their output based on self-framed constraints of their capabilities and strengths. Sometimes these boundaries are based on past experiences. Sometimes they are based on perceived capacities. Sometimes these limits are based on nothing.

  I can’t do that. (Why?)

That is too much for me. (How do you know?)

I can’t put in that much effort. (What would happen if you did?)

I am not smart enough to solve that. (Can you be sure if you haven’t tried?)

So, how do we break through these limits? How do we get stronger?

  Pushing It…

Many people are going through the motions, but are nowhere near their limits.

If you want to be stronger, you have to push your boundaries.

Pushing it is what it takes to increase your limits. In the gym, bodybuilders discovered this long ago. But, the same principle is true when it comes to inner strength. Discipline and drive.

Want to test your limits? Push yourself. Test your self-perceived constraints to see how accurate they are. Make sure your goals are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved.

You Are Stronger Than You Think

  Most people underestimate their strength.

As you go through your day, challenge your capacity. Test your limits.

Push yourself, to find your true boundaries and define your strength.

When you discover how much you’ve really got, you may surprise even yourself.

What are your self-imposed limits? Which do you need to push? When have you found that you were much stronger than you thought?

It is the road you take that decides your destiny but not your destiny that decides the road you take.

The question is: Are you satisfied with who you are? Are you doing what you are capable of doing? Do you get excited about what you are going to do when you get up in the morning? It is high time you asked these questions that reflect the truth about your life. More often than not we have the ability to achieve much greater things, but we get caught in the average things in life and waste our potential. Each one of us has immense ability. But most of us fail to use it. Why?

  1. There is no exact purpose for your life.

  2. You underestimate yourself.

  3. You are too busy to think about any-thing.

  4. You are in a comfortable zone.

  5. You fear failure.

Ask yourself, what difference am I making in the lives of others? Would you be happy and satisfied with what you have achieved? Are you following your passion? You must find what you love and what gives you fulfillment.

Don’t be afraid to make a new beginning. Go deep and explore the possibilities. As you go deeper and deeper, you begin to add meaning to your life.

  Types of innovation

Scholars have identified at a variety of classifications for types innovations. Here is an unordered ad-hoc list of examples:

  Business model innovation

involves changing the way business is done in terms of capturing value .

  Marketing innovation

is the development of new marketing methods with improvement in product design or packaging, product promotion or pricing.

  Organizational innovation

involves the creation or alteration of business structures, practices, and models, and may therefore include process, marketing and business model innovation.

  Process innovation

involves the implementation of a new or significantly improved production or delivery method.

  Product innovation

involves the introduction of a new good or service that is new or substantially improved. This might include improvements in functional characteristics, technical abilities, ease of use, or any other dimension.

  Service innovation

typically refers to service product innovation which might involve, compared to goods product innovation or process innovation, relatively less technological advance, being more interactive and information-intensive (though some service firms have major technology efforts - think of ATMs and banks, for instance. Service innovation may also involve novelty in the way in which services are produced (i.e. service process innovation), or in delivery of other aspects of the service - including creative content in the case of entertainment and cultural services.

  Sup*** chain innovation

where innovations occur in the sourcing of input products from suppliers and the delivery of output products to customers

  Substantial innovation

introduces a different product or service within the same line, such as the movement of a candle company into marketing the electric lightbulb.

  Financial innovation

through which new financial services and products are developed, by combining basic financial attributes (ownership, risk-sharing, liquidity, credit) in progressive innovative ways, as well as reactive exploration of borders and strength of tax law. Through a cycle of development, directive compliance is being sharpened on opportunities, so new financial services and products are continuously shaped and progressed to be adopted. The dynamic spectrum of financial innovation, where business processes, services and products are adapted and improved so new valuable chains emerge, therefore may be seen to involve most of the above mentioned types of innovation.

  Incremental innovations

is a step forward along a technology trajectory, or from the known to the unknown, with little uncertainty about outcomes and success and is generally minor improvements made by those working day to day with existing methods and technology (both process and product), responding to short term goals. Most innovations are incremental innovations. A value-added business process, this involves making minor changes over time to sustain the growth of a company without making sweeping changes to product lines, services, or markets in which competition currently exists.

  Breakthrough, disruptive or radical innovation

involves launching an entirely novel product or service rather than providing improved products & services along the same lines as currently. The uncertainty of breakthrough innovations means that seldom do companies achieve their breakthrough goals this way, but those times that breakthrough innovation does work, the rewards can be tremendous. Involves larger leaps of understanding, perhaps demanding a new way of seeing the whole problem, probably taking a much larger risk than many people involved are happy about. There is often considerable uncertainty about future outcomes. There may be considerable opposition to the proposal and questions about the ethics, practicality or cost of the proposal may be raised. People may question if this is, or is not, an advancement of a technology or process. Radical innovation involves considerable change in basic technologies and methods, created by those working outside mainstream industry and outside existing paradigms. Sometimes it is very hard to draw a line between both.

  New technological systems (systemic innovations)

that may give rise to new industrial sectors, and induce major change across several branches of the economy.

  Social innovation

a number of different definitions, but predominantly refers to either innovations that aim to meet a societal need or the social processes used to develop an innovation

There lies in the heart of every man and woman a quiet hunger:a longing for an earth shaking significance.

It can be heard in the quiet, most unedited times like when our head hits the pillow duanwenw.com at night. As the pressures of the day fade away the voice catches our attention: “I was meant for more than this, there has got to be something more.”

Many people have learned to accept a life of quiet resignation, committed to maintaining the status-quo. But still, in the times we least expect it, we hear that distant call again: a call for meaning, purpose, passion, significance. It continues to haunt us, to stalk us, and as we try to silence it with reason and maturity we find that indeed, it is a fire within our bones and it will not yield.

Our suspicions are correct. There is a larger story and we have a role to play in it. It has been said that what a man does during his life shall echo throughout eternity.

The ellipsis left by god, let life pursue the miracle of the next moment without hesitation. God makes a joke, and we all think of it as divine will, we forget ourselves, and faith is still there.

What victory can be compared with this victory? Which one of the wars in bonaparna, when the sunshine of the day of Austin, was the glory of this superhuman effort? The triumph that this heart has never gained? An unhappy man, poor, disabled, lonely, a man of pain, the world does not give him joy, but he creates joy for the world! He cast his misery into joy -- the joy of all the proverbs of the soul.

The pursuit of life is for better survival, the end of survival is for no regrets.

There is a moment when life is closed, so long as we still love life before we stop breathing, we still yearn for the future, we still look forward to it, and the peak of life is no longer distant.

The pursuit of true meaning is not what is held in the hand, but whether the heart is sunk by faith.

  Roll Away the Stone

I enjoy life because I am endlessly interested in people and their growth. My interest leads me to widen my knowledge of people, and this in turn compels me to believe in the common goodness of mankind. I believe that the normal human heart is born good. That is, it’s born sensitive and feeling, eager to be approved and to approve, hungry for simple happiness and the chance to live. It neither wishes to be killed, nor to kill. If through circumstances, it is overcome by evil, it never becomes entirely evil. There remain in it elements of good, however recessive, which continue to hold the possibility ofrestoration.

I believe in human beings, but my faith is without sentimentality. I know that in environments of uncertainty, fear, and hunger, the human being is dwarfed and shaped without his being aware of it, just as the plant struggling under a stone does not know its own condition. Only when the stone is removed can it spring up freely into the light. But the power to spring up is inherent, and only death puts an end to it. I feel no need for any other faith than my faith in human beings.

Life Confucius of old, I am absorbed in the wonder of earth, and the life upon it, and I cannot think of heaven and the angels. I have enough for this life. If there is no other life, than this one has been enough to make it worth being born, myself a human being. With so profound a faith in the human heart and its power to grow toward the light, I find here reason and cause enough for hope and confidence in the future of mankind. The common sense of people will surely prove to them someday that mutual support and cooperation are only sensible for the security and happiness of all. Such faith keeps me continually ready and purposeful with energy to do what one person can towards shaping the environment in which the human being can grow with freedom. This environment, I believe, is based upon the necessity for security and friendship.

I take heart in a promising fact that the world contains food supplies sufficient for the entire earth population. Our knowledge of medical science is already sufficient to improve the health of the whole human race. Our resources and education, if administered on a world scale, can lift the intelligence of the race. All that remains is to discover how to administer upon a world scale, the benefits which some of us already have. In other words, to return to my simile, the stone must be rolled away. This too can be done, as a sufficient number of human beings come to have faith in themselves and in each other. Not all will have such faith at the same moment, but there is a growing number who have the faith.

Half a century ago, no one had thought of world food, world health, world education. Many are thinking today of these things. In the midst of possible world war, of wholesale destruction, I find my only question this: are there enough people now who believe? Is there time enough left for the wise to act? It is a contest between ignorance and death, or wisdom and life. My faith in humanity stands firm.
